Pt1 here

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

well some of you know I have an Alfa Romeo bug I need to scratch

So started the quest to check out how much the car insurance industry would like to extort from me each year.

Spotted a 156 1.8 TS close by, its not what I'm after, but thought "I'll use it's reg to get an idea of the prices."

39, single, lives in an area of Manchester that ok for car car insurance, £350 for a 09 Suzuki swift.

15 years held licence zero points, max NCB, 1 car written off in May 2012, non fault, NCB was protected.

1st 2 quotes are £650ish, but rapidly climb

Hastings Direct are my current insurer wink

So try and beat that with normalish cars wink

I had quotes between 3 and 13k from comparison sites for an impreza a couple of years ago - 33, 5yrs ncd, clean as a whistle and in the best type of postcode

anything over 1500quid just means they dont want to insure you imo

Ended up paying 670 with a proper broker in the end - and it went down the next year

When I got my SLK I got a weeks free insurance with it. Normally I pay about 300 to 400 quid a year.

Obviously the weeks free insurance is to try and get their foot in the door - however they quoted nearly 3 grand!!!! rofl
Didn't stop the woman on the phone trying the hard sell - she couldn't get her head around the policy being TEN TIMES more expensive being an issue. Crackers!

Not just car insurance, we were initially quoted £3000 a year for travel insurance due to our medical conditions (heart, diabetes, epilepsy, cancer). Got it down to £140 after a phone call.

...and the other extreme: annual fully comp insurance on my 62 plate GT86 - £118!

I'm over 50 in a good postcode but even so, I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah had the same with ford, about 3 grand to insure a focus, 'do you want to provide your payment details sir?' as if I was just going to go ahead and buy like that.

Does this have to be on price? I've had something special getting quotes for my new used car;

them: so do you have experience of 'powerful'* RWD cars
me: I have had a Jag which seems to be boader line for most quotes
them: that's fine we can do the quote
-- 30 mins of detail giving --
them: and your NCB?
me: x years I have the certificate
them: excellent, will you be getting a new policy for the Jag?
me: nope i've sold the Jag so can put this NCB on here
them: when did you sell the Jag?
me: about 6 months ago
them: oh we can't insure you with that long a break
me: for 6 months????**
them: yup, please come back in a year!
me: no I don't think so *click*

  • neither car is PH powerful RWD, e.g. it's not a TVR
  • can completely understand not being able to quote if not owned the "powerful" car for a year or two and using 200cc hatchbacks... but 6 months? Give me a break!

I'm more surprised at the £350 for a Suzuki Swift tbh - not that amazed that the quote for the Alfa is slightly less than double that. I can only assume that the area of Manchester you live in isn't actually that great in the eyes of insurers. I mean, I'm a good few years younger than you, have far less NCB, but I recently got a quote for a Celica 190 (parked on the street) of £175, doubtless due to the fact that I live in the wilds of North Yorkshire. Having said that I am dreading seeing what quotes are going to be on the new Mustang I'm toying with the idea of getting...

£350 for my car in Manchester is generally quite good.

Only £50 more than Warrington where I used to live.

I once got a quote for my Cooper S when I was about 20, one quote came out at over £40k! I have a screenshot somewhere, I'll have to dig it out.

My Range Rover was a funny one, I've been with Admiral for years, but they wouldn't go any lower than £800 (24, 5 years NCB, 2 on another car, safe area etc.). Some places quoted well over £2k, but ended up at just over £300 with Flux (and also allows me to drive any car 3rd party smile)

I'm the same, 21 soon, and my current insurance on a slightly warm Fiat Punto was £720!

I tend to use the comparison websites as an indication, this year after a few phone calls my quote was 40% less that the comparison site, which i was pleasantly suprised about

This for us, say older than 50.
Was your first/second car a "sporty"/car with a bit of poke.
Or a heap o ste worth not a lot, you did all the work yourself/with yer mates, spent an hr or two everynownthen at a scrappy getting bits n peices, no radio, no mirrors, a heated rear windscreen was trendy.
And was relativley cheap to insure!!

I'll raise you a Fiat Panda quote for a new driver. This is for an 18 year old, with a Fiat Panda 100HP in Bromley with no voluntary excess...

Fantastically bonkers bow
