After years of weekend cars, evos, scoobys a few m3's I've had enough of trying to scope out speed cameras, watching my back for blue lights and crawling over speed humps.

After going out for a quick raz around in the back country lanes in my work car (golf) I've had more fun than I had done in a while.

So, my question, does anyone have any good suggestions for a cheap <£1000 small hatches that might be fun around the country lanes.

Saxo VTR / VTS (whichever was the quick one; I can't remember)

1.7 puma. The Saxo VTS is a better steer but there's much more choice of puma.

My bmw is far nicer on country lanes and single track roads than my cherry. Wouldn't get anything old personally for what you describe.

Just feel safer, lack of abs and any safety equipment is not fun. Never know when your gonna meet the nutter in his Range Rover doing 60 round a blind bend.

Had too many near misses on the road to and from my house, it's 12 miles of single track.

A big 4x4. There's not much my Jeep won't keep up with on my single track road to work, high line of sight, can cut certain corners and know exactly which corners I can dive up on the verge on if needed. MX-5 round the same road was a lot more tentative. Actually didn't enjoy it that much on the single track road as it felt too low. Everywhere else though that completely changes.

On a blast in a previously owned turbo Forester I came round a single track corner fairly slowly to be met by a very quick Land Rover. She went right up the verge without slowing and shot past me with a cheery wave. No way anything sporty could have kept up with her!

If line of sight is good where you're thinking then that all completely changes!

I'd go Saxo or potentially a mk2 MR2

Just bought a 325ti for £1131 off ebay but to bring it up to standard will cost more and some spannering. It is slow but huge fun although its main role is to drift on track. I had a Puma 1.7 before and it was good, depends if you like FWD or RWD.

I have always found that it's a good idea to drive on country lanes as if I might meet someone driving like me around the next corner...
