apologies if this has been asked before, but im going to view a car on Saturday morning which is a long way from where I live, going down on train and was planning on driving the car back provided im happy with it, however, im not sure if I can do that as the tax doesn't transfer over to the new owner. can we date the paperwork the day after I pick the car up so I can get it home that day rather than having to do it and wait for the insurance database to update with my details and go back the following week??

any help appreciated

No, you need to tax and insure it before you can legally drive it home!

It won't be picked up by ANPR but if you are stopped for any reason, you'll be driving without tax and/or insurance.

When I bought my M3 a few weeks ago, I had to spend nearly 20 bloody minutes sorting this crap out on the phone phoneirked

But, when driving home, I was legal... driving

It's up to you, but not a risk I'd take! angel

I did this exact thing last month. Assuming the log book is there, then you can tax it online. Hell you can even do direct debit.

yes but snt the insurance need to show in my name, the database wouldn't update that quickly would it?? i.e I decide that morning to buy the car, insure it and the tax online would need to check the insurance is in my name??

Nope, I taxed mine before I insured it, though the DVLA website still showed tax on the car.

I think the system's changed.

Go see the car, if it ticks all the boxes, insure it, tax it, drive it! smile

It has indeed changed, your insurance is no longer checked when taxing a car (although they tell you it is at the post office), they check it a few days later and if it's not insured they will send you a fine in the post.

Technically you could drive it away.

It's still taxed up until the v5 has been received and processed by the DVLA.

You would however need to insure it.

As long as I'm insured I wouldn't be remotely worried about driving home a car that I'd just bought.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Useful input!!!! NOT

thanks to the guys who helped with my query, I couldn't make out from the DVLA website whether insurance was checked or not as it doesn't actually state that at all anywhere on the site.

Anyway, lets hope the car turns out to be as good as it looks and has been discussed with the owner and I can bring her home!!!

Thanks
