They say it is to check that the key is actually for my vehicle and to see if it holds any information

Anyone out there clued up on what information

Not a lot to be fair, just the VIN number, mileage and some codes relating to the immobiliser.

There might be some fault code data, but I have a feeling that might be a myth.

Maybe on your cars, on later models it is far different.

OP, what age/model?

Oops! - Because beer smile

Pretty sure these had a load of data stored on the key.

Any BM service advisers on here I wonder?

Because I have only given them 1 key they said that that the key might hold some information about whether the car has been driven using another key after I have reported stolen..basically they are trying to rule out that I had a 2nd key I imagine?

Seems like there is a confusion across the board on this

I asked someone who has worked for land rover all their life and they say the key will have all the cars data eg.make model age vin miles etc but then someone who shall I say lives life close to the law is of the opinion all these new car keys will store what time and date the car was lost used with the particular key..interesting stuff

Also BMW can tell them how many 'official' replacement keys (if any) and when / where they were supplied

And if you had the car stolen without keys, insurance company like to see you still have two keys funnily enough!

Second Monty Python's post above.. I had an E90 and when I went to the BMW dealer they were able to download all the info about the car's condition and set vehicle preferences etc.

OP - Worth looking into the infamous BMW ECU thefts whereby cars were stolen using blank BMW keys. Assuming you don't know already how the car was taken.

Well I see this key report being pretty flawed if I'm honest..what's to say that if a report came back saying the key was last used before a reported theft that the time and date in the car that the key relates to is absolutely correct.

Good for identifying a vehicle etc but not totally watertight in terms of insurance purposes

Also on my mini (still BMW ish) the key also stores preferential user settings, and after the first six months in my ownership I swapped keys in order to keep the batteries inside charged up, settings on my car changed and I couldn't figure out why until someone mentioned this was the case.

I had a BMW stolen nearly ten years ago now.

I couldn't find the second key for love nor money; they just said ok and that was that.
