I would really like to understand what goes through the minds of people who buy some the few examples of cars I have listed below.

The new Renault Clio Renaultsport/Dynamique

Vauxhall GTC/Corsa VXR

Volkswagen Golf GTD

Audi A3

Audi A1

Just a few of MANY new cars out there by all of the big brands that simply aren't worth the price tag.

I'm not talking about people who have company car allowances just people in general who go out and pay top whack for these cars that cost 20, 30, 40k+

Is it to impress the neighbours?
Because they like the car and the price tag doesn't matter?
The feeling of driving brand new metal?
A combination of all three?

I have to to admit I have NEVER driven any of the above cars myself, (I have only driven 4 cars in my life being a 21 year old. In addition, none of these cars interest me and It would seem difficult to say what these cars sway people pay following sums when some times the only real benefits of buying new is:

Cheaper tax
Better economy
Servicing
Warranty

I don't envy these type of people who buy the above cars I just feel there are so many nicer, enjoyable and cheaper cars out there that you could be pick up for 2, 3 times as less.

're the renault sport it gets rave reviews on evo/Chris Harris, so combine a fast sporty drive with decent fuel economy and there's your reason.

Because they can?

I've learned that trying to apply logic to everyday situations is like trying to win the lottery - the vast majority of the time you fail, but occasionally you succeed.

Maybe people have different tastes to you? I like certain cars that others don't. Simple as that surely.

I guess you own one the types I cars I refer to? smile

It matters nothing to me, everyone Is entitled to spend their money on what they want. I am just intrigued to the thinking process of those who splash out on such cars when arguably there are cars out there which are ok, not brand spanking new but cheaper and no real major different in comfort, design and tech.

Hmm I'm not sure, had 7 Golf GTI's my wife does over 70 miles a day and drives a Golf GT TDIi,

Looks like I might need a van soon so a GTD might be on the list as would suit both.

Since when was a golf gtd expensive?

People buy the cars they want. Why did you buy what you drive when you could have a mk1 mx5 for £500

The OP is a ridiculous question. If you are trolling its a crap attempt, if you are serious you are a bit dim to be polite.

and no, I drive a st box purple 15 year old focus worth less than £500

Also my other question would be what cars have you driven?

Newer would generally mean more reliability + a warrenty whilst none of the above cars appeal to myself I can see why then appeal to others.

When I was younger (20/21) I could of spent 3k on a reliable diesel/petrol saloon and been normal. Instead I bought an old e30 325i sport (a lot of money for a 20+ year old car that's had a fair amount of owners) it was expensive on fuel terrible to drive around town given it was modified towards track days and always had little things that needed doing to it. Why did I buy it? So I could do track days and do trips to the nurburgring and enjoy myself whilst I had some disposable income. Would I do it again? You bet I would.

How about some examples?
It would give us an idea of where you're coming from with your view.

Because when your career progresses you will probably like a new, reliable car that someone else hasn't used first.

I have a diesel golf. Bought new. Don't really need anything else.

Great sat nav, cheap finance, 4-year all inclusive warranty and servicing package, very pleasant 900cc petrol turbo.

Was a favourite for cheap leases, ultimate boy racer car, cheap straight line speed though I'm not a fan.

Decent performance and economy, classless, relatively low depreciation, discreet.

As above, maybe a little more bling in some circles (but not all), can be cheaper than the same-spec Golf depending on version.

Pleasant car when you want something small that doesn't have to be cheap. Some of those cars can be had for something like £1k down and £170 a month and will return a real-world 50 mpg.

If you drive 10k a year that could be a £40 a month saving over a 33mpg 1.6 petrol Focus. You start with brand new tyres, brakes, etc., and tax is cheap. So that's maybe £30 a month for maintenance and repairs compared to even an average eight-year-old car and the tax saving can be £15 a month.

If you can get an eight-year-old car for £2,500 and run it for four more years, it's losing approximately £50 per month in depreciation. Add in the extra costs above and it's costing you £135 per month. Compared to £190 per month for the new car, the 'oooh shiny' brigade is paying maybe £55 per month more for their motoring. I don't think that's horrendous value - certainly not beyond the wit of man to understand why you'd pay a little more for something that's more than an appliance without being a PH roadburner.

Do you buy new or used underpants? If new, why don't you buy some 5 year old, 3rd hand ones? You Could save some money.

All you are doing is applying your own logic. I don't have a problem with any of those cars but I can't understand why people would buy a Nissan Juke, for example, or an Evoque. To me they are hideous and make no sense at all. In fact I don't even get the concept of SUV, but that's me.
