Apart from bribing an employee of the DVLA/C or a copper, is there a method (legit, or otherwise) where I can obtain the address of a plate I'd like to buy from the owner? The plate I have in mind is a regular prefix arrangement, meaningless to all but one particular person/vehicle.

I can get certain info, I know the car it is on, I know it's taxed, I even know the colour, but I'd guess it'd take me a while to stumble across this.

Anyone?

If you had the plate, what would your reaction be if DVLA gave your address out to anybody who said they wanted to buy it from you?

I would GUESS that the only way to do this is to tell a little white lie and write to the DVLA for the owner's details saying the vehicle has been abandoned on your land & you'd like to contact them before you get it towed away.

Have often wondered this! What about a car that has been scrapped/disposed of/written off etc?

DVLA form V888.

Make sure you read, and comprehend the ramifications of, Note A.

That's a little unreaslist to consider the DVLA would do that. However, I actually did something similar to this in 1998. They wont release the present owners info, but they did pass my details to them. The previous owner got in touch and we had a successful communication after that. I have already asked the DVLA if they would do this again, but they have said no, due to too many requests for such things.

Besides, if someone was to offer me several hundred squids for an otherwise meaningless plate, you're damn right I'd want to know about it. The car is a regular little french machine, 16 years old and probably worth about £50.

Given that the question you asked was...

May well be a non-transferable plate. The V5 would identify if the plate can be transferred or not.

Haha, that would be nice, but no that's not what I'm after. But I would swear that the plate CRA1G was on a bright red 911, thirty years ago. I'm sure I spotted this in bothwell, Lanarkshire way back then. Plus I doubt if my pockets are that deep. :-)

I'm going to fill in the form and if I'm first to realise the significance of the plate (probably not) and first to actually make contact, then I'll post up the result. I just hope the plate will be transferable. (I did think that the DVLA would be making all plates transferable for a fee?, perhaps? )

Here's hoping! Thanks guys for the positive posts, I knew I'd get the right direction here

Filling in the form will get you precisely nowhere, unless you have a good answer for 'just cause'.

Other than lying on v888 (which is a criminal offence I believe), there is no way.

Set up a saved search for the exact vehicle type/age/colour on autotrader and ebay and wait for it to come up for sale.
Then buy the car, transfer the plate and scrap the car. Admittedly that's playing the long game, but you might get it eventually

He could try to use their well know incompetence on this issue with some bland justification of needing to contact the registered owner.

What if it's a silver Audi A3 or something else ridiculously common?

You can narrow down the search fairly tightly. Once you've looked through all the ones that are currently for sale, you only have to check the newly added ones, even on something very common that's only a handful a week to flick through on the email they send you. Not exactly a back breaking task but depends how badly you want the plate I guess!

Most vanilla plates will be transferable. The ones that aren't tend to be those that have been re-allocated to found/restored classics after being assumed scrapped, or (not all) age-related plates issued to imports.

Like what? Genuine interest. There's a plate out there that I really want, but not enough to risk the £5k fine.

Admittedly mine is different, it was sold through DVLA auction sometime ago and is currently used on an 08 car (it's a 55 reg). So I know it has value to its owner.

Say car has parked on your private land?
If it comes back to bites you, "oh. Looks like the car has gone"

I've never actually done that so it might not work.
