Why do certain car dealers display cars with the tailgates open?

Usually Ford, Peugeot etc or Indys.

WHY??!

Perhaps it shows that the car is unlocked and they're happy for you to open the doors.

I've always presumed it was to show off the boot space, which is a practical consideration to most people when looking for a car.

I once read it showed the dealership was open and people more likely to stop and have a look around if they can clearly see the cars are open too.

Who knows. I've never bought a car off a forecourt.

draws attention and tells you what the place is far better than anything other than a really massive sign.
10 cars parked in a line, just looks like a car park in front of a business, 10 car with the boots up is unusual (relatively) your eye is drawn to them, and when you see them, and because it's not unusual for a car dealer you know instantly it's a car dealers

I used to sell Fords and the Sales Manager always insisted we opened all the tailgates every morning. We questioned him on it and he said "It shows that we're open!". Funnily enough before he came to Ford he worked for Peugeot.
