Simple question: what brand of de-icer do you use? And is it effective?

Reason I ask is that work have provided some free Unipart stuff recently. Free stuff, woooo! Except it's utterly crap. On a typical frosty morning a hefty dose of the stuff only serves to turn the frost from opaque to vaguely translucent. It's totally ineffective and to top it off it smells like stale cat piss...

Just use tepid water, it's much more effective than de-icer

Another +1. Just make sure you switch on the wipers straight afterwards and do it just before you drive away, else it will eventually refreeze over your screen. I also keep a spray bottle of neat, decent quality (-30oC or better) screenwash. It works better than deicer and doesn't refreeze, unlike - ironically - most deicer.

The best one I have found and use is the Shell Garage own brand in a trigger bottle. Superb. Clears quick and doesn't smear.

Works vehicle- boil kettle, fill jug, add slowly to windscreen to let it thaw ice and evaporate, before freezing. Repeat for side widows. Should glass break, it's down to a flaw, and not costing you anything .

I use a shovel, frost can be thick north of Watford - or in the summer, a scraper.

Decosol de-icer and screenwash. There is no other. However, it's becoming increasingly hard to find and had probably been banned because it actually works.....

Luke warm, or even barely warm water will do the job fastest. Boiling or close to boiling water will actually re-freeze faster (Mpemba effect).

Turn on engine and demister to heat inside of screen, get out and scrap side windows, by the time you reach the windscreen its beginner to melt, scrap it of and go- all the p*ssing about with warm water is a waste of time and with the method above the car gets warm inside too.

FWIW Its worth having some deicer stored at home for those days the car doors freeze shut and you can't even get in :-)
