Hi folks, I'm just about to buy a French cat d equivalent written off Audi from France. I plan to either repair or break it.
Would anyone know what would be the best plan of action?
I work a lot in France but I don't have an address which would make registering it from the previous owner who is a friend, problematic, and if I imported the car as it's 14 years old I think I'd only need a uk mot, but seeing as it's a bit worse for wear that's not possible at the moment.
Or do i leave the written off car in my French friends name, ship it by truck back to the uk for 'repairs', fix it, mot it and then get it uk registered or if I just decide to break it do I still then have to register it in its current state or do I just sign export papers from France and get a uk breakers to dispose of the shell once I've sold off all good parts?
I've looked at the dvla info and can't really get a clear answer with it being a write off.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Get it de-registered from your mate's name, bring it back to the UK, get NOVA immediately on arrival.

Then break it or fix it. If you fix it, MOT it and UK register it then.

Apart from not being possible to register it without an MOT (you're right - 10yo+, no CoC, just an MOT), there's really no point.

Thanks for the reply, but doesn't NOVA only apply to vehicles that will be in the UK for more than 6 months? Even if I fixed it it'd be out within that time. So I'd have a bit of a grace period as it's still officially in his name?
Spoke to the dvla today to confirm I can't register scrap as it's way off being able to be mot'd.
And my local car crusher will accept a French export form if and when I dispose of the shell.

It's needed for any used vehicle being UK registered. You can't register it if there's duty or VAT owing, NOVA is HMRC saying "We're happy".

As it'll be still in the ownership (on paper)of my French friend who is a French resident on entry it won't have to be NOVA registered unless it's there more than 6 months I just read. Then after we see the extent of the damage and cost to repair I'll get him to export it to me from the French registry, then I'll scrap it without any need to register on NOVA due to the length of stay, and the dvla as it'll never mot again or see the road most probably. Then crushers only need an export form to dispose of the shell.
And I guess the paperwork from france to export will only be a one way thing? They won't need a confirmation from the uk surely?
Lots of uk cars get crushed here in the ski resorts when they're abandoned.

If it's not going on the road, you don't need to bother registering it at all, so no need for NOVA ever.

Or just chop the shell up into chunks and dispose of it to metal recyclers. No need for _any_ paperwork. The paperwork is only needed to get DVLA to accept that the car no longer exists. Since DVLA don't know the car ever existed...

Nope. All they care about is that it's not their problem any more.

It's quite difficult to get the insurers to give the car to my friend then me, it's not like the uk where you can buy scrap or damaged cars easily.
I'm meeting the owner tomorrow to figure out how to do this, the insurance company are saying they'll only let it go to an approved repairer, so gonna try and make that repairer my mates bodyshop in another eu state.
French bureaucracy again is a pain in the ass for me.
