Keyless entry. Anyone know how these things really work and how i can encourage sleep mode over long stays?
I think:
- car unlocked, fob nearby is bad as there's a lot of communication
- car locked reduces communication, but may still occur
- if fob is out of range, then it should sleep. No point removing battery.

What prevents sleep mode?? mobile phones?
I know one answer is to just replace once a year whatever, but if i can do some simple things to help it would be better, esp in cold weather.

Alternate between using the remote unlock and manual unlock to increase battery life to two years.

I always thought it was simply:

Press unlock button: Fob sends "unlock" signal
Press lock button: Fob sends "lock" signal.

Obviously massively oversimplified wrt rolling codes etc etc, but gets the jist across.

I assumed any locking after x seconds was timed by the car and was along the lines of car asks fob for signal, if it's still in range, fob replies, if it's not in range, the fob doesn't reply and the car relocks.

Those were the good old days

These days it's permanently on so the car detect you, turn on the interior lights, open the door at a touch of the handle and youre off
You're lucky to get a year out of what used to last 5 years or more
Easy way to make it last longer?
Take the battery out when youre not using it
