Usual cliche. I'm 40 later this year so planned a visit to the West Coast USA. Was thinking of picking up a car and driving Vegas > LA > SF. Quite fancied doing the highway 1 trip along the Pacific coast.

Anyway, whilst looking for car hire I noticed a couple of sites that had some very nice classic cars to rent. Something like a 68 Camaro etc.

Has anyone done this before? Any car issues or are these places usually well run? Also has anyone done the route before?

I did that route but started in SF-LA-Vegas which may be a slightly better way to do it as you are on the coast side of the road which might make it a bit more scenic. Probably nothing in it.

Its a nice run but not blown away by the scenery particularly.

Lots of places to stop off on the way. You could do SF to LA in a day but I'd break it up in to two days - otherwise it'd be missing the point.

Monterey, Carmel, Pebble beach is nice - worth a stay.

Due to the flights & my birthday I'm having to do it vegas > LA > SF, think I'd prefer more time along the coast but never mind!

Did you pass through "Morro Bay"? looking at the map it looks nice and approx halfway between LA & SF

Morrow Bay? Yes, but we didn't stop - to be honest, it was mid afternoon and we were headed for an over night stop in Solvang so saw it from the highway only really saw the "rock" out of the window - didn't seem special enough to pull over for.

Santa Monica is worth a wander about and watch the usual iron pumping on the beach - have a walk on the pier - which is a bit like Blackpool - nothing too "amazing"

Malibu - blink and you'll miss it - just see the back of a load of condo's that face on to a very ordinary the beach.

Santa Barbara - nice for a cup of tea and another wander - harbour is a bit like the marinas you see in Chichester but with palm trees.

LA is a dump and worth about 1 or 2 days to see the Hollywood / Beverly Hills stuff.

Vegas is an experience but not to everyones taste/

Favourite place was by far and away San Francisco/Monterey/Pebble beach.

If I did it again I'd do SF and a loop that took in Yellowstone instead. I'd probably miss out southern California altogether.

www.blacktopcandys.com

haven't used them but when i looked at this last year they were the only real option. ended up with an SUV in the end as we'd have needed 2 cars for our trip so the cost to hire a classic was too high.

they did respond to all my emails quickly and were very helpful.

Everyone seems to say miss out LA and part of me is tempted to by pass it completely, maybe take a drive through Yosemite to SF.
