Now that we've had a decade and more of manufacturers making ever more efficient Diesels, are there any that have stood the test of time? Am thinking of turning to the dark side, but only if theres something out there that can be trusted not to negate the fuel savings

Off the top of my head, the following have been/had problems:

Honda 2.2Ctdi- DMF failures

Fords- DMF (are DMF'S still problematic? Surely they've had a while to fix them now)

BMW 120D- swirl flaps and timing chain issues on post 07 (?) cars

PSA- Dmf & Dpf?

Are there any that have been trouble free? The 1.4 toyota unit in the first Mini maybe?

My Mazda 6 2.2 is currently in the garage with the timing belt issues.

No idea of costs as its a company car, but not sure if this is common or mine is rare.

I know of an alfa 147 that's got over 200,000 miles on it (original engine).

I wouldn't mind betting those issues are more of an application issue than design problem. Diesels like to be worked, not pottered around town.

Audi 3.0tdi is a good lump - much better than the 2.7tdi or 2.5tdi.

2.0 and 2.2 Pug engines seem pretty good. (DV10 and DV12). Occasional DMF issues but nothing horrendous.

Does a Peugeot HDI engine count? It's a common rail diesel AFAIK. I've got a 2.0 8 valve version showing 228k, still seems smooth enough and more refined than a lot of less travelled diesels I've been in.

I have and A8 with 222k and an A8L with 155k, both 4.2TDI. Other than servicing and the odd parking break failure they are as good as gold. I managed 37mpg on a steady run today and they move well for a car that size smile

Before than 2 E39 530d's and again, no issues with either of them apart from MAF replacement on both. The bigger the engine size the less work they seem to need doing.

Alfa 2.4 JTD in the 10v spec is pretty solid. Much like the Volvo D5 D3.

Not that one - it's got Land Rover's own 'Storm' TD5 unit.

Since pretty much all diesels suffer from the same issues, no matter what manufacturer, surely that is a sign.

Maybe the current ways that things are done are not the right ways to do things.

why has no one gone down another route for injecting fuel? unreliable pumps and injectors. why?
why has no-one gone down another route for smoothing the vibations? DMF. short life and expensive.
same goes for DMF and DPF.

Just because some manufacturers went down this route, does not mean it's the best!
