Are tow trucks exempt from the speed limiters that other lorrys have. I passed one in an average speed area on the way home tonight then a mile or so later it passed me in the outside lane doing at least 70. This thing was huge and it was also pissing down at the time.

No, same 90 KPH as other LGVs.

Unless it was Oirish and on the road to Stranrar, they have a "relaxed" attitude to limiters.

I can't quite remember the exact law but something like if you are a specialist recovery vehicle within 100Km of your depot and on an emergency call, you don't need a tacho.

Still get older trucks without restrictors- pre 2001 on a 7.5t & pre '98 12t+ I think without looking it up, & if a recovery & within 100km of base & an older pre 56 plate he wouldn't need a tacho disc in & as would be analogue at that age not a digital it wouldn't record as an over speed & stored in the unit.
