Thick fog, lorries jack-knifed, multiple cars involved. Reminiscent of the M5 crash a couple of years ago.

I'm close to there and it was very thick indeed this morning when I got up at about the time this was happening.

Hopefully speeds were low and casualties also.

Anyone know if the radar systems on modern cars work through fog? I'm guessing yes as aircraft would be pretty useless otherwise.....new C class has it and I'm curious

M1 closed too, Chiltern line closed, and problems on the West Coast main line at Coventry...

Today is not a day to go to Birmingham

I've used the adaptive cruise control on my Golf GTD in quite thick fog and it operated as normal.

tbh there is never a good day to go to Birmingham...

Funny, I was just thinking the other day that there hasn't been a major pie up for a while. Never been involved in anything like that, cant imaging what must go through your mind as you see a wall of 40 tonne artic right in front of you and you know you cant stop.

There's a funny line in there, but possibly not the right thread...

Likely yes. Also probably insufficient distance left between cars. People have actually got worse at this in recent years. Tailgating is extremely dangerous and yet appears socially acceptable for some reason confused

This sounds nasty though. frown

Especially when the same is in your rear view mirror!

I was a minute safe of this.

North bound crash which crossed into south carriageway.

The scene is very very bad, including an artic having its arse ripped off.

Current count is 43 vehicles involved.

The wife (who's medical) thinks it'll be MAJAX level.

The M40 is the best motorway in England (with the possible exception of the M69 - but that's more of a test track).

When the M40 works is it brilliant - the bulk of drivers who use it during the week have the same ethos - fast and safe progress - the outside lane is reserved for 90 mph plus. Even the police seem to take a more relaxed view... I enjoy driving on it because fellow road users are generally extremely sensible. However, when things go wrong on the M40 it can be a big mess. The stretch from Oxford to Warwick is notorious for fog - looks like some unfortunate people have been caught out and not adjusted speed according to road conditions.

Exactly, not too much help when the car behind doesn't have it and you have to brake hard.
