Struggling to get a sensible insurance quote & a brief intro
Discussion
First a brief introduction, I have always loved cars, my first car at 19 was a ropey 205 gti. This lasted 2yrs until the nice mot man took me into the pit and poked his hand through a fist sized hole in the floor pan.
During my time with the 205 it forced me to become handy with the spanners, something I am begrudgingly grateful for. So after enduring French reliabilty, I bought a honda civic esi (the vtec but not really version) from an illiterate landscape gardener who spent the test drive telling me in finest wurzel "slow down, bad bends here".
The Honda civic never failed to just work (an alien concept after the 205) but was a little bland and was duly fitted with integra type r suspension, which left it sticking to the road like crazy glue. I actually got some use out of this thing and it cost me beer money to run. I miss it.
Anyway, times changed, I moved to London due to work and sold the civic for £50 more than I bought it for. Since then (about 7yrs) I have been a named driver on my mums aged but reliable vw polio (home to 3 species of moss and the obligatory wing mirror spider) for the occasional IKEA jaunt or long distance trip, but having recently had a new job and a gf who passed her test a yr ago, I am in a position to get my own set of wheels. This is largely for fun, rather than any practical motoring need, so I would prefer to buy something to provide some 'joie de vie'.
My NCB has elapsed. I live in a 'nice' area of London with the predictable high crime rate. I am not young 31, but am hampered by my gf having passed her test only a year ago. Part of the reason for getting a car is so she can get behind the wheel.
My heart was a flutter earlier when I got a quote for a Clio 182 for <1k until I realised I had stated I already owned the car. Upon correcting the details it returned to a heart stopping 2k!
Any advice on getting a sensible quote for a car that makes me excited about the prospect of car ownership, without a dramatic change in personal circumstance? I realise a hateful super micro ultra mini citybox is feasible, but I would prefer to walk. And thanks for reading.
Oh and even the venerable mx5 is silly money to insure.

Is that quote for the 182 with your gf on it?
My gf passed her test at 28-29-ish, age counted for very little, £1800 for a 1.3 fiesta.
What do the quotes look like with just you? I've a feeling you're not going to get anything exciting insured for small money with a newly passed driver on the policy.

For me alone, it is <£800 for pretty much anything bar exotic metal. She passed a little over a year ago now, but if either of us were likely to drive like a prick, it would definitely be me. Although I am passed that phase in life having had my spirit broken by the vw polio.
Quotes come out significantly cheaper if I put the date a month in advamce, are insurers likely to honour that price over the phone? Even if contacted before the date in the quote?
