Theoretical scenario

Remortgage the house and buy a Ferrari or limited edition Porker (or other car) for £50-£100k.

Drive it and enjoy it and then sell in c.5 years for a profit.

Realistic / possible / which car??

Explain which alternative universe you live in, and appropriate advice can be offered.

I think the chances of making a profit once you factor in the running costs of such a car are so vanishingly small as to be non-existent.

Bit of a gambol, but if you take away the need to make a profit, and say that breaking even whilst having a great experience is the goal, then it's got to be doable.

If you need to make a profit, there are better placed for your money?

I was looking at 456's after the "I bought a 17k Ferrari thread". One guy on here has spent 40k running a 456 over the last few years ( not the 17k thread guy). Think it was something like £2.20 per mile.

Superb - is it worth the risk? Who knows but its a great chance to live the dream.

Though how about one of these

993 GT2/Turbo
Lotus Carlton
E30 M3 sport Evo 2
Lancia Delta Evo 2
Mk2 Jag
El Camino
TVR Sagaris
Etc

Or the easy great option Ferrari 355 - perfection

You are probably right and yes that thread contributed to this a little - saw a lovely 599 and it started my idle mind thinking on this sunday night. I mean with interest rates so low and with a limited mileage policy and warranty cover you could have an amazing ownership experience beyond what you would normally perhaps consider. I mean so many dull cars out there now that people shell out £40k+ new that depreciate like a rock when you can buy something really interesting that holds its value or rises, i mean looks at the GT2s...was considering one of those a year ago, would have been a great buy. Anyway, appreciate a little fanciful but I dont think its that crazy smile.

Don't get me wrong, and I don't think it's crazy. If the goal is to have a super car that is otherwise un achievable, it's a great idea. I've profit I the over riding motive, then it's margional at best.

In terms of car prices, I think we are in a bubble. Would you like to speculate on a bubble?

It would of worked perfectly if you'd done it 3 years ago and advertised the cars now but if we had that luxury we'd also know which lotto no.s to pick

Interestingly one thing I have noticed over the last two recessions is that collectible cars have fallen and then bounced in such a pronounced manner that I may well take a punt, if i am lucky enough to have funds, when the sh*t hits the fan again.

EVO has an interesting "auction watch" section where they sort of comment on such trends and I think they ran an article on appreciating cars within the last year. Trouble is many of those earmarked have seen a value bump in the last 12-24 months.

When interest rates rise and they will as inflation grows....yes later this year.....a number of leveraged individuals will be selling their cars. Pay off the mortgage first and don't ever 'invest' in a car.....just drive it. You would be better off buying a single Berkshire Hathaway share than a Ferrari or 911.

Extremely high risk. Only car I would consider is the new Porsche 991 GT3 RS (with manual gearbox if they do it). It's 190k euros.

Sell it with delivery mileage a few months after delivery to China and be blacklisted with Porsche for life.

I think you'd get considerably better returns spreadbetting wink

Few cars will reliably appreciate at anything like the interest rates you'd pay on a mortgage, especially if you actually use them. By all means remortgage to buy a nice car, but don't expect to make money out of it.

It is possible make money doing this, but I think you've missed the boat this time round.

You have probably missed the boat on a number of Ferrari models in that budget, and as has been said already actually driving these cars will not only affect their value but also attract commensurately high maintenance bills, likely cancelling out any appreciation you might see.

The best advice I think has been said already - if your goal is to enjoy a supercar, with any profit being just a nice surprise when you sell then it's a sound plan, but if your primary goal is investment potential then buying (and particularly driving) a supercar isn't the best use of the money.

This, a couple of years ago you could buy a Ferrari 348 for £25k. Now they start at nearly £40k.
