First "nice" car - and first post
Discussion
Hi,
New to the forums here, joined as I need a bit of expert advice...
Later this year, I'll get to buy my first "special" car. I'm going to have a budget of around £16k and at the moment I'm thinking of a Porsche 911. The requirements are this - must look good, be very fast, feel special, and have enough space in the back to transport 2 children a short distance. Fuel economy and other running costs are to be considered, but looking into it, a 911 appears to be ok (just)...
So, my questions is this... What would you get?
Thanks!

Fast, practical, more interesting and rarer than a 911. And a lot faster.

I don't think there is a £16k 911 that feels 'very fast'. I'd otherwise recommend it.
Depends what you're used to doesn't it. I have mates that think my 996 3.4 is very fast, I think it's quick but nothing special.OP, for £16k a 996 C2 Coupe manual makes a very compelling case for itself, there is even a chance it may hold or raise in value if you keep it & look after it for a few years.

I have to say, I'm a little taken with the TVR, but the 911 is still looking favourite... As for how "very fast" it feels, I drive an Audi A3 1.9 Tdi at the moment - it'll feel fast!
Please don't come back once you've bought a 996 asking for advice as the brakes don't work
!Agreed. C4S 996. Great car. Quick? Depends on your frame of reference. But it is a great drive, whatever your frame of reference.
Surely can't get much cheaper and if looked after will serve you well for many years. The only car you'll ever need - unless the family gets too big.
Beware of running costs though, if you're on a tight budget. I never had anything major go wrong in my 50,000 miles, but still cost £1k to £2k per year to look after it properly (maybe you could make servicing every 18 months).

I would back the Cerbera, but I'm bias.
It's a fascinating mixture of restraint in some areas and aggressiveness in others. Quite elegant to look at, and very comfortable yet with one of the angriest engines ever built. If it doesn't feel fast even after years of ownership, it needs a tune up.
They don't blow up all the time but like the Porsche, on average they cost a couple of grand a year to run. Some years are cheaper than others. They tend get better the more regularly they are driven.

Instead of a 911 I would buy a Maserati 3200 given a similar choice, my wife would however insist we had a look at a Cebera although they are getting harder to find in the sub £15k bracket. Either would be a splendid alternative to a 911. (Dont dislike the 996, just my money would go elsewhere).
The Jaguar XKR is rather lovely
You can fit 2 kids in the back (and no, it's not as practical as the 911 rear seat wise, but has an excellent boot).
