Direct Line - massive saving! What am I missing?
Discussion
It's one of those 'sounds too good to be true' scenarios.
Just had my insurance renewal quote through from Aviva - same as last year at £367. Out of interest I punched the figures into Direct Line - £220!
Excess is about the same.
Seems too good to be true, is there anything I need to be aware of before I drop Aviva and embrace the annoying red telephone?

Is the estimated annual mileage the same?
Have they dropped commuting from purpose of use?
Is the value of the car correct?
Are the named drivers (if any) added correctly?
On the topic of trackers, I got some quotes to see how much of a difference a tracker would make to my insurance premiums and the price increased. It also increased if I was a member of IAM.

Check you can still drive other cars on a TPF&T basis - a lot seem to be dropping this.

Driving other cars with Direct Line & Aviva is Third Party Only Cover, there is no fire & theft under this section with either of these Insurers along with the vast majority of the marketIs the excess the same etc.
That's really interesting about IAM and tracker increasing premium!
Yes, as far as I can see they're all the same. Not too sure how to value car, I've had it three years so it sure isn't worth what I paid for it.
Apparently DL is 'Defacto 4' rather than 'Defacto 5' which Aviva is. Not sure that makes a great difference, they said something about it covering car keys, loan car and whatnot (the latter is a bit odd actually as they asked whether I wanted cover to include a courtesy car and I said no).

Direct Line, Churchill and Privilege, who are all the same company are always much cheaper than anyone elsr for me. Come renewal time they try and double the price but I just do a new quote and they match it. If not I jump to one of the other brands?
When I had my R32, I had a simlar thing but it was More Than that no one could match.

DL have their own repair centres and will not allow you to use main dealer repair facilities, although they are not alone in this. There may be manufacturers warranty issues on bodywork.
That's interesting. I'd rather choose who repaired the car.Dammit - cancelled the Aviva renewal now (although to be fair, I've no idea what their policy is on this).

Aviva own their own repair centres and will charge an increased excess if you use a main dealer etcHave you checked confused and the meerkat also? For all my cars they have been cheaper than direct line. I therefore assumed that their brag of "not on any comparison sites" is to mean "because we aren't competitive".
You might be the one that actually got a good deal from them though

I really don't get how it all varies so much - I've never had a decent price off the above group. I know insurance companies use complicated algorithms etc, but you'd think they'd come to broadly the same number.LV= is by some way the cheapest for me (of companies you've heard of), and they don't mess about with the renewal prices. Yet I've suggested them to other people with apparently similar details and they've been miles out.

I had a girl who was insured with DL run into tje back of me and DL had no problems with my car being repaired by my local VW Dealer Bodyshop. Some companies do inrease the excess and make the process more long winded if you don't use their repair centres, but it's still your choice, especially if the accident is not your fault.
Watch Direct Line, I sent my proof of no claims (a long time ago) which they say I never sent and I know I did. Anyway a few months later had a significant increase in my premium no ifs and s or buts because I failed to send proof of no claims spent hours on the end of my mobile trying to resolve the issue. Needless to say I don't bother getting quotes from them anymore.
