In 3 years of driving a stty Ford KA ive never had a car park dent (Or I may have had loads, just never noticed on the KA)

Hired a Fiat 500L for work, 3 days, jsut noticed a dent in the door. dont remember it being there before, and it wasnt on the check out.

Should I fess up? Or hope they dont notice? Its about a 5p size dent with slight paint scuff.

Advice please thankyou. Sods law etc.

Do you have a copy of the rental contract? Any damage should be marked on there with your signature corroborating the condition prior to rental.

They won't care. Don't worry about it.

On the agreement there will be details of what constitutes 'damage'. I think a door ding can be around the size of a 5p before they worry about it.

If its a Hertz rental then look in the boot where the spare wheel is as thats normally where the old appraisal documents are kept so you can trace the history of any damage - or prove it has been previously been noted but not by the guy who checked it over this time.

I suggest they will care; it will be an excuse to extract some more money out of you.

They most certainly will care and will gladly charge your CC unless you opted to take out their super-duper insurance.

However like what has been said, check the damage sheet to see if its previously been reported.

Even if you manage to get away with it on handback, they can charge you afterwards when they notice and that's when the fun begins.

Been there and done that.

Whether they care or not is completely down to how motivated the employee who checks your car back in is. The brand you rent it from has very little correlation to the amount they care about damage.

I would assume they will care, and have as much information as possible to hand in order to minimise your potential loss.

Alternatively, get a mobile repairer out who will probably be able to fix it for about £50.

Lean casually against the dent in the door, looking skywards and whistling, whilst they are checking for any damage. It can't fail.

Would be cheaper to get a local dentmaster or similar to knock it out before you take it back I think.

When I rented from Enterprise recently, they had a plastic tool which they use to check for damage. Thought this was a better approach and took normal wear and tear into consideration.

I used to work for Enterprise and this sort of fancy technology wasn't around then!

What a fascinating modern age we live in.

All UK rental companies are really strict on damage control - it's a vital element of their profitability. They work on surprisingly thin margins and don't absorb damages. If this mark is not on the damage sheet (which was given to you when you collected) then expect to be charged.

When I used to work for Avis years ago we only logged damage it was major or glaringly obvious. Otherwise on the wages they paid it was not worth our trouble arguing it out with a customer.

If you get the manager or some supervisor around while they're taking it back you're more likely to get problems.

I'm sure that was true - years ago. They're all very thorough now....

Except it won't actually get repaired, and any charge will go straight to their profit margins...

Why bother getting it fixed when the car will get damaged again. Better to fix it when it's sent to auction/returned to the manufacturer or just not bother at all.

If you polished out the paint scuff the dent may near enough disappear.

Time for some T-cut - genuinely, this time round.

I once oiled the sides of a rental Alfa 156 that we had been rather enthusiastic about driving through very narrow shrub lined Italian country roads. Prior to returning the vehicle, of course. Yes, oiled...

I'm not sure if your rental company will be the same. But every time I've hired a vehicle from enterprise they give you a piece of card with a hole around the size of an orange in it, then inform you that if any damage on the car fits inside the hole then they don't care.

I'd suggest that if it doesn't look too bad they might not mind or may even assume it was there in the first place.

If the paint is damaged, I reckon it's likely you'll lose some deposit.

I had a puncture in an Enterprise car last week and I'm paying for a new 18" tyre.
