My daughter will be 17 at the end of the month and is mad keen to get on the road. The only affordable vehicle that we have for her to drive is the Smart car. Not ideal I know with the semi-auto box, but she's going to be having regular driving lessons in a proper manual.

The Smart and my Discovery are both insured with LV with the max. NCD (9 Years). LV can't add her to the policy before it expires in April, due to the NCD. They can only start a new policy based on no NCD.

So far I'm looking at a stand alone Learner policy with Collingwood, which seems pretty reasonable.

Any advice gratefully received.

Surely losing 9 years NCD is far more expensive than the dedicated policy? Then you don't risk your NCD either.

You can get a bespoke xx days policy whilst she is learning. Cheaper option and it will cover her despite the car being insured by someone else etc.

Here is an example of a company that offers it https://www.collingwoodlearners.co.uk/

I used one of these (IIRC a 12 week policy) until she passed her test. After the test is when it gets really expensive

Yes I agree speedking, I was just stating that though so that I didn't get any replies saying just add her to the Smart's policy.

Colleague at work used Marmalade Insurance to cover his company car for a family member to learn to drive.

I've no idea of monthly costs & can't ask him as he is on holiday this week!

Looking at that website, they do annual learner insurance! Surprising that anyone would need more than a couple of months max.

£50 per week isn't too bad but they limit the cars to insurance group 15, does anyone know of any companies that would insure cars with a higher insurance group? I saw a porsche 997 with L plates on the other day, wonder who they used.

Just about any insurance company will cover a learner, just like any other type of driver for a year. They allow you to change to a passed driver for an additional fee when you pass.

PS - £2400 per year is terrible. It was about £600 for my sister to be covered for a year as a learner on our second car. (1.1 L Panda)

Was only a couple of hundred more to change it up when she passed.

I'm currently learning, and am insured on my Dad's car using www.wearemarmalade.co.uk. It covers up to group 32 IIRC, and cost less than £80 per month. Also, if she does have an accident, it won't effect your NCB.

I Looked into this when my daughter started to drive, I bought her a fiat 500 as the insurance was a damn sight cheaper on that than anything else.
I then added her to my Admiral multicar policy under her own name with both myself and the Mrs as named drivers.

The policy needed renewing after 5 months and with that she earned 1 years NCB for only 5 months driving. Sweet.

One thing i would say is check how much the policy goes up when shes passed her test.
