Drove on wrong side of road
Discussion
Hi,
I am new to driving and yesterday joined an, A Road on the wrong side. I immediately knew of my mistake. There were 2 cars coming down the road, so I put my hazards on and let them past. I then turned around 50 yards further down were there was a laybay.
Can I get punished for this, there were no cameras or police.

You need to report yourself to the nearest police station, it will most likely be a 3 pointer and a £100 fine. You will probably be made to retake your driving test. Oh and don't forget to tell your insurance company, your premium will no doubt go up next renewal.I am new to driving and yesterday joined an, A Road on the wrong side. Alternatively don't do it again.
There's a dual carriageway going into Winchester where there's a junction in the central reservation for traffic coming out of Harestock to make its choice which direction it wants to go. In a moment of silliness I pulled out of the junction in the central reservation and turned left, saw the strange looking road markings and hung a very swift u turn.
No traffic on either side so I got away with it but it made me laugh.
This was soon after passing my test and mistakes like this are exactly how people learn. Hopefully without killing themselves in the process.

Not long I after I passed my test I accidentally ended up on my first motorway in my ropey mini with not much fuel, but several mates onboard.
In my anxiety to take the first possible turn off I managed to take a Works Unit Only exit. The policeman I met there could barely believe my stupidity and basically told us to pi££ off.

I Was joining the A1 about a month ago when there was a car with an old couple trying to go round the roundabout over the junction the wrong way, they corrected their mistake and started going down the slip road in the lane for the petrol station, most people would have accelerated past them at this point fortunately I had seen his previous error and decided I'd hold back. Sure enough he cut across onto the A1 at the last minute.
So yes people do do it although they should also have their licences taken away as they are an accident waiting to happen.

Did it in Germany leaving a meeting in Cologne in a rhd car, instinctively drove on the left and only when the first car I encountered was driving on my side of the road. Actually I was on his side of the road and it took me a little while to realise why he was flashing and driving head on to me!!!!

I used to drive past there daily, you were not the only one to make that mistake as I used to see it at least once a month. No traffic on either side so I got away with it but it made me laugh.

Statistically, it's safer to drive on the wrong side of the road for two reasons:
1) most other people are on the correct side, so harder to collide with
2) >10,000 people crash every year on the correct side, only a handfull on the wrong side, so it's clearly a lot safer.

Was that on the M4 between Swindon and London by any chance? If so that's a weapons storage facility. In my anxiety to take the first possible turn off I managed to take a Works Unit Only exit. The policeman I met there could barely believe my stupidity and basically told us to pi££ off.

No, this is not a problem at all. Driving on the left is a "should" not a "must" in the highway code so it's perfectly legal to drive on the right if you choose to. I sometimes drive the wrong way down the M6 when the southbound side gets too busy.I am new to driving and yesterday joined an, A Road on the wrong side. I immediately knew of my mistake.
