So its insurance renewal time. Beside this year diamond decided that a years no claim and experience deserve for the price to go up I now have continuous insurance to deal with.

So diamond got told where to go. Despite they managed to drop their renewal price from £426 to £293 in a matter of 10 seconds. How do insurance companies get away with making up prices only for them to moments later decide that im infact £133 less risk than they thought when I threaten to leave. Especially with something that is legally required but the prices can be decided on a whim?

Anyway insurance berating aside. My policy with Diamond runs out tomorrow at 19:50, I have now taken out a policy with tescobank for £262 but that doesnt start till 00:00 tomorrow. so technically my car will not be insured for 4 hours and 10 minutes. Now obviously i dont plan on driving the car during this period but will this automatically throw up at the DVLA with their silly must be insured or sorn rule? Common sense dictates i am not going to sorn my car at 8pm, refund my tax, Then re-tax my car at midnight. So will I be ok, or shall i expect some welsh VBRJ?

Why not simply call the new insurer and ask them to insure the car for that time in order for the insurance not to lapse

4 hours? Calm down Eric, that vein is going to burst if you're not careful.

I think there's a modicum of common sense involved. If you buy a car at 11:15pm on Sunday and use the online tool to tax it, but can't get through to an insurance company until 9am the next day, while you obviously can't drive it I would be amazed if you were prosecuted for not getting insurance in the 10 hours that nobody was manning the phones for - prove me wrong, PH!

For four hours I wouldn't worry about it. If I buy a year's insurance tomorrow at 5:53pm, but find a cheaper policy come renewal in 2016 that starts at midnight from the day after, I don't think there's any continuous insurance caveats that you'd be breaking. I think the continuous insurance is more to combat people who just tax a car and leave it in a garage/off-road, as opposed to people who are actually buying new cars or insurance policies. Perhaps a fallout from the times when taxing a car was generally done at a DVLA branch - I'm amazed that it was only a few years ago, feels like a distant memory.

4 hours is noting. They don't have heat-seeking missiles locked on target the moment a car is uninsured.

It took 3 months for the systems to figure out that I'd given my insurers the wrong registration.

Ye olde SORN/untaxed vehicle number cruncher used to allow 6 weeks (to the middle of the second month after the last tax disc had expired if SORN hadn't been declared and the vehicle retaxed) before imposing sanctions...

250 minutes?? Pah! smile

Jocularity apart, the poster above me quotes 3 months... OP, ye'll be fine for the circs as described cloud9 .

Really? Is that what is says on your annual certificate? I've never seen an annual policy that didn't expire at either noon or midnight.
