Hello all,

Thought I would throw this out there while I am in the midst of mulling over some potential purchases.10k is the target.

I currently run a rusty but very reliable and fun W210 E55 AMG for use as a station car. I fancy a change and wondered if anyone has any other suggestions. I need at the very least 5 seats for the brats because even though we have a Rangie for family duties I do often seem to be ferrying multiple children about.

My thoughts are as follows. E39 M5, RS6, Cayenne Turbo, Subaru Wagon or more likely Forester STI. I am not averse to running costs and have the assumption £1500 quid a year with the odd double that every three years being not a massive issue. I don't do any mileage so mpg no issue.

I like comfort and simple things are important I do lots of early starts in the winter so simple things like a strong window demister are important. All being said I love a bonkers motor as well so the ability to occasionally have a thrilling drive is high on the agenda (maybe I am talking myself out of the RS6 but bork factor is also a worry)

Sorry if slightly dull post but I thought at the very least the car choices might stir the mojo of the pistonheads masses.

XJR, E55K, E60 550i, Alpina B10, V10 S6, W12 A8... I've got a bit of a thing for silly engined barges at the moment!

Missed one, W12 Phaeton!
Or from another thread how about a Lexus engined Espace? Only downside is you have to make it yourself

If you're considering an E39 M5 and C5 RS6, then it might be worth considering a B5 RS4.

I have an S55k and i wouldnt say its a performance car, sure its blistering in a straight line, and it holds really well for its size due to the over complicated ABC suspension set up, but its not really a car you hoof around in constantly, was more of a cruiser with ample grunt for when needed.

Depends how you define performance car really.

Id say as a shortlist

Audi:

RS6 C5
B5 RS4

BMW:

E39 M5

Merc:

W210 E55 AMG (estate for style points)
W211 E55K AMG

Your generous maintenance budget would be well over the top for a Subaru. On the other hand its likely a drop in the ocean compared to what could be required by an RS6 or the other listed cars. M5 possible a happy medium.

Ha of course you understand that the 1500 per year is not a target but a realistic approach to owning an older performance car.

HMMM much as I have always wanted the RS6 it just gives me the fear.

What about something smaller, slightly more sporty and tuneable like an E90 335i?

Cheers Steve and you are correct would be nice to live with. Just want something a little more "special" if you know what I mean.

I know I am operating slightly flawed logic but in my head. E39 M5 near classic possibly best in class of the genre, Cayenne Turbo special for different reason ie comedy value of travelling that fast on stilts, RS6 same kind of iconic deal as M5 and Forester STI rarity factor and the oddball.

Biggest factor for that motor though is that I ideally want 5 seats. I have 3 kids.

Appreciate the thoughts.
