Go for something a little diffrent to all your friends.
Not to sound stupid but for the money you have to spend, you could easily pick up a MGF/MGTF, or any number of rovers.
But for your criteria, a Fiat stilo 3dr (1.2) with a 6 speed manual.

Fiat Grande Punto, dirt cheap to insure, pretty reliable (mechanicals, electrics, only if you don't the odd small piece of interior falling off). Piss easy to fix, so labour is cheap. Looks pretty good as well. If you live around north london I know *cough* someone *cough* who is thinking about selling theirs...
Typical PH. OP posts asking for recommendations for a fwd car. 3rd response suggests an MGF.
I would honestly not care what kind of car it is at all. Just get whatever will be cheapest to insure for a year and let you build up some no claims bonus.
You want to be looking at cars that other 18 year olds would avoid? How about a Nissan Almera? You can always get a car you like more in a year when your insurance will be cheaper.

Well I have a Corsa B 1.0 and I like it.. got is as it has cheap insurance and is cheap to run so I can save up for a better car next year.
Don't be too focussed on getting the biggest engine you can get insured on, just get something that is cheap to insure, has 12 months MOT and isn't going to rust away until you can get insured on something nicer

t, missed the £1000 bit. I guess the same merits still apply to the mk2 Punto, but 'I don't know someone who has experience of owning one'
