Hi, does anyone know what the Revenue wants to prove VAT/Tax has been paid on a used car in the supplying country?

Importing from an EU country? The old reg docs should do fine, because it won't have been registerable there without VAT having been paid.

Have just gone through this process through the NOVA system (same as filling out NOVA 1 form) - basically if it is a private sale you dont need to worry about it. If the car is brand new it is a different story.

Hi thanks. Its from a dealer in Belgium but the car was registered in Italy. I suppose if the dealer gives me a tax paid receipt then all's good?

How long did it take you before you could order the plates and get going?

It's being sold in the EU, with EU plates. It's VAT paid, and NOVA will be a formality.

Once you've got NOVA, get it insured on the old plates or VIN, get a UK MOT (if it's 3yo+) and/or the CoC (if it's under 10yo), a V55/5 from Swansea, shove it all in the post with payment, then sit back and wait. Might only be a fortnight or so. Get plates made. Tell your insurer the UK reg. You're on the road.

No EU plates on the car, not registered in Belgium. I think in Italy you have to surrender the registration before "export". Of course it has a VIN/chassis number so I can use these instead. I have the CoC anyway - although car is over 22 years. Will look up NOVA, thanks...

Yes, the vendor has to hand the plates back - but there should be Italian paperwork.

So just needs an MOT, no need for CoC.

It's the HMRC certificate that confirms no VAT/duty owing.

I haven't seen anything with italian reg details on. Does this mean I'm snookered?

So what are you planning to send to DVLA for proof of age etc?

It certainly should come with SOME paperwork. If not, then does that not raise your eyebrows just slightly...?

Sure, loads - the CoC states its age plus the service book with the chassis and engine numbers in it just nothing re Iti registration as they seem to have returned all that. I need to check as haven't completed the deal yet. Thanks for comments + all.
