Forgive me if this is a repost. I'm not sure how I can live without these. I think I might have to buy a new car or retrofit them to my existing one. I'm sure a pulley system could be rigged from the steering wheel to each fog light.

My shed of a Range Rover Sport has these. It's almost ten years old.

Mind you, it also has extra bright brake lights and misaligned headlights just to annoy other PHers.

If you can't park or corner without a fog light to assist you must be bloody hopeless.

yes

It looks like the car has an electrical fault from outside as well. Bloody stupid pointless idea which is an answer to a question nobody has ever asked - just like electronic handbrakes.

why is it legal for fog lights to be (designed to be!) used when it isn't foggy?

My '92 MR2 Turbo had cornering fog lights. It ain't a new idea. Very useful for that one day every year or two that you actually require front fog lights to drive. Indispensable. smile

Dangerous. Had them on my Seat. When sat on a busy road signalling to turn into a side road, often people will flash.... Not to let me turn but to try and tell me my fogs were on, or one was anyway.

Both of the front fogs were on when my sister reversed out my driveway earlier. Can't figure out how they help when going backwards...

Had thought she'd left them on but changed to a single when she turned heading forward and both were off when straightened up so definite controlled by the car.

Never got this either, my Leon lights up the front fogs when reversing, yet the reversing light is that dull it serves no purpose! The cornering fogs is the main reason I'm getting vcds to code them out

I really can't understand who ever thought that was a good idea, we are reversing so obviously we need the front fogs on! I can only assume it was dreamt up by some bored marketing idiot, not that I know how I'd even market that feature.

I used to be anti, but I have them on my new Superb & they are pretty good really.
They can be switched off in the menu but I'll keep them.
Even reversing they do have a purpose. When swinging around in reverse it could illuminate the front corner a bit better anyway.
No harm done..

They are not a fog light but a cornering light. It uses a different bulb which may (or may not) be in the same housing as the fog light.

On the picture of the Superb you can see that there is a small recess on the left of the unit partially covered by the text box. This is where the cornering light bulb is situated and it fires at a side angle across the fog lamp.

If they used the fog lamp then the beam would be to the front and too low making it useless.

On this car the cornering light is in the main cluster next to the round main beam. You can see it facing towards the camera compared to straight ahead like the other lights.

70's Yank motors had separate additional cornering lights connected to the indicators.

I've seen a few cars were the fog light comes on if they make a turn, no indicators.

Had a Seat or a VW of some sort come towards me round a bend with their fog light on. As soon as they straightend up it went off.

Pointless tech.

Agreed. Never understood the point of it. Seem to see it on smaller new cars - Seat Ibiza's, Polo's, etc..

Not necessarily, they have come about as led lights DRL's and headlights are now so bright that the traditional amber indicator when onn is lost by the light given out by the headlight.
If I remember the regs correctly (that someone posted here) if the indicator is with 40mm of the headlight you have to have a separate light source to act as an indicator.
Also very helpful for those have lack the ability to use the indicator stalk

Similar subject; daytime running lights.

I know they've been discussed at great length, but I actually see them as more of a hazard because the rear lights don't come on with them, and the amount of people I see about who haven't turned their lights on because they can see ahead with the DRLs (fronts on, rears off) is getting silly now.
