Having come to the conclusion that it would be a complete waste of time contacting the DVLA, in order to request them to forward details of the owner of a particular vehicle - I am turning to the PistonHeads folk to see if they can assist me.

I am genuinely searching for the owner of this registration plate - K9GSD, which is on a 1998 red Land Rover Range Rover 2.5 DSE. Has anyone on these forums seen or know the owner of this vehicle?

Having been first registered in Glasgow, this is where it may still reside. However, the plate may be on a worse-for-wear vehicle seeing as it is coming up for 17 years old. Perhaps it could even be rusting away somewhere in a Scottish farm outbuilding. The GSD part of the registration could make the plate important to an Alsatian or German Shepherd Dog breeder or enthusiast like myself.

My reasons for wanting to contact the owner are simply because I want to make them an offer for the plate. I am a German Shepherd Dog enthusiast and already have a similar registration.

If anyone can help then I would be most grateful.

Don't quote me was a few years ago, but any lead is better than none (see what I did there?)

EDIT: Try the PlateWave app, lets you contact people via their number plate.

I think it's a pretty good thing that DVLA don't just forward someones details to some random person?!

Thanks for the lead (ahem) - I have sent an email to the potential owner of the plate, so thanks very much.

I can fully understand why the DVLA don't send owner details to people, but perhaps it's about time that there was some kind of form that you could complete via them (DVLA) in order to express interest in other peoples registrations.

The DVLA could make a simple charge for this and everyone would be happy.

An update to the plate - K9 GSD:

This reg is now on a white Land Rover Discovery, registered in January 2015. It was sold as EF64 NUH from Lloyd Ripon Land Rover in Ripon. Has anybody seen it at all?

I've always wanted to know why they are called "German Shepherd Dogs" rather than just "German Shepherds". I can't think of any other dog breed that ends with the word "dog".

Is this just to differentiate them from actual German blokes who look after sheep for a living?

Yes, I can tell you where it is parked. But wont as that would be ridiculous and a breach of somebodies privacy, how do I know you don't want to steal the car or stalk and attack the owner? Maybe you are a dog thief and want their gsds.

And this plate is K9 GSD - i.e. "Canine" , so its saying, Dog German Shepherd Dog, as opposed to the Feline, Bovine and Lupine variants biggrin

I'd say that plate is worth between £5 -10k to a GSD breeder/exhibitor. What would you value it at?

It’s a translation of the German where it’s called a “German Sheep Dog”
The name was changed ‘officially’ from Alsatian in the late 70’s to “German Shepherd Dog”

I guess it’s the same as Sheep dog - which can be two words or one, but either way it’s a Sheep Dog not a Sheep.

a breach of somebodies privacy
It really isn't in this case. If i walked past it i'd see the plate. Thousands upon thousands of people in other cars will see the plate every day when the car is driven etc etc

Everyone? You can't see any issue with it at all?

I wouldnt see an issue if it was a validated online form and all you could do was to express an offer for the plate and a value. As long as no personal info was swapped or ability to but unvalidated data on the form ( abuse...) then what would the issue be?

It would be a pretty round about method of stealing dogs wouldn't it.

I quite fancy a jet ski, so I'll start a forum thread looking for the owner of JETSK1. That guy is probably into his jet skis, so he probably has one I could steal. Happy to travel.

No they wouldn't
If I had a nice private plate I wouldn't want people mailing me all the time asking to but it

Just make it expensive. £100 per request and £50 goes to the plate owner, capped at 5 requests per year to the plate owner.

Personally, until I opened this thread, I had never heard one referred to as a "German Shepherd Dog". Always simply a "German Shepherd".
