What car...........for the mother!
Discussion
My mam has owned for about 8 years now a 51 plate Toyota Corrolla......Like this one:

Horrible looking creation, but has been very very very reliable. It only has around 60k on the clock, and only ever needed the usual consumables; tyres, brakes, battery etc....
Though reliability has been first class, the paintowrk has seen better days (has as the design....). The lacquer has peeled almost all over the car now. She pretty much hates the car now, but can't afford a new one.
Anyhow, it's her 50th birthday end of May and as she has warned us she doesn't want a party, and is already going on holiday, I have decided I'd like to get her a new (to her) car, to show my appreciation for everything she did for me and my brothers earlier on in life.
I'm looking at a budget of £4k max, ideally cheaper if possible.
Requirements:
-Reliable - highest priority really.
-No older than 03/04 -ish
-mileage under 80k
-good service history
-petrol & manual
-economy 40+mpg
-Smaller than the corolla -but not tiny
-Reasonably good looking
Couple of thoughts so far:
Toyota Yaris 2009 - 5 door preferably, something like this maybe

2007 Honda Civic like this:

She also likes the look of my Alfa GT, but not sure I'd recommend one for her due to maintenance needs.
Any reccomendations from the masses or experience of the above cars? Any thoughts appreciated.......

Honda Jazz not a bad shout, but I don't think she would entertain the looks of one to be honest, I can just imagine her accusing me of calling her an OAP by buying her one! She's not a typical 50 year old tbh.
I also thought about a mini cooper, but not sure of reliability?
I probably should've mentioned that she's no stranger to driving decent cars. She had a Corrolla t-sport, impreza sti, escort rs2000 & rs turbo etc in the past. Her last car before the corolla was a 1.2 Clio which she really didn't like (broke a lot).
What are the Toyota auris' like?

Or the Panda 100HP? Not sure she'd go for the looks of these tho...

I've got a Jazz, a newer one than your mums budget will allow, but it's great. Edited by mrpbailey on Saturday 21st February 00:07
Skoda Fabia VRS , the diesel one , looking at your mums history she probably enjoys a sportier car, the diesel Fabia is very cheap to run the 1.9 engine super reliable and cheap for parts , no dpf to worry about and still a very practical car
You might have to increase the mileage allowance to get in budget but as I said the 1.9 is a great engine and capably of monumetal mileage unlike a small petrol, a million taxi drivers cant be wrong

Not a bad shout however the interior is a bit 'young boy-ish'. As she does a lot of short journeys (2-3 miles)I discounted a diesel for this reason. Think a petrol engine would return better economy over this distance? You might have to increase the mileage allowance to get in budget but as I said the 1.9 is a great engine and capably of monumetal mileage unlike a small petrol, a million taxi drivers cant be wrong

My mum loved hers but had to sell it due to a knee problem , she now drives the mk2 Vrs . I don't think the interior is sporty but you know your mum best , as for fuel can't see there being much in it but diesel is more expensive We bought my mum a Mazda 2. She loved it, but she really did prefer to be driven at 79 rather than drive herself. My lady drive her around a bit & loved it so much she effectively took it over.
At 180,000 with nothing spent but service items, it is still going perfectly. It is about to be replaced with another.
I'm becoming a fan of Mazda. My son has a 3.0L turbo diesel 4WD duel cab Bravo, fitted with a bulbar, big winch, snorkel, big wheels & tyres, & lots more off road paraphernalia. He drives it up & down tracks which would challenge most horses.
At 160,000 he tells me he can hear the CVs are getting tired. I can't hear them at all, but even so, after the stuff he does in it, I'm amazed the whole thing isn't shot.
