Hi i was wondering if fellow pistonheads could help me narrow down a car to buy as a new driver over 25 years old. I saw a mint MK 4 GTI T for good price Link and the annual insurance for it was three times the price of the car.
Maybe if you know a cheep insurance company i could use for that car.
But the main question is suggest me some decent cars that would do 0-60 mph in less than 10 or 9 seconds. Been looking and comparing for hours...
Really don't want to be one of them "ricers" with a 1.1l banger

For a new driver, regardless age, you're not going to get something cheap to insure that's performance oriented especially for £2k. Buy something reliable and cheap, run it for a year or two. Save some money and then buy something nice.

I kinda realised that frown but what would you suggest ? Something that at least is able to overtake a lorry if needed.
Is there an car classified website that you could arrange by insurance group too ? Shame Pistonheads dont do it.

But if you can find a little more money you could potentially look at a Fiat Panda 100. Plenty of great reviews and very low insurance as its essentially still a Panda.

Edit: my first car was a 1.3 cdti 75. It wasn't fast, 0-60 around 14 seconds. But overtaking wasn't impossible, just had to plan ahead a little more.

Insurance groups aren't a very good indication of insurance costs. Just get a load of quotes from a load of brokers.

Gearboxes blow up.

ETA: also 0-60 13.6 seconds. 'Sport', huh?

11 years ago, my first insurance policy came at 3.5k for a TPFT cover on a Nissan Primera GT.

Second year, it went down 1k to 2.5k.

Third year never came, I left UK.

I will never forget how st it is for new drivers in UK to get reasonable insurance.

Sorry OP, can't help much, but thought it might make you feel better.

Yeah biggrin i knew it will be a lot, but i thought as im over 25 will be less, but around 3k a year was a surprise. And even the cars that are not sport or anything still almost the same, it's like you are forced to drive a stty nissan micra or something if you can't afford to dash out 10k for a new car, though even if i had 10k would rather buy a nice Honda or Audi that's maybe 5 - 10 years old.

Think outside the box and get something the insurers won't expect a first time car owner to get. Barges should be your friendsmile

When I first passed (2010) I drove a 1.1 L fiat panda. Overtaking lorrys, peugots and micras was never an issue - it's all about timing. Get something you can thrash everywhere without worrying about points/crashing and that costs pennies to run.

Try a Suzuki Ignis Sport, suits most of your requirements, when I had mine it was the same to insure as my previous 1.4 corolla. You should have your pick of them with a 2k budget too.

Just make sure your test drive includes some rough roads as ride is firm, up to you whether you can live with it or not.
