Looking to 'lose' £40,000 in a car for a year maybe two and one big consideration for this latest purchase will be retained value.
Needs to be powerful, at least 300 bhp, useable regularly including some town work, look good too. 1-4 years old ideally. Nothing that does 15 mpg, economical would be a bonus.
So far i am thinking A45AMG? Golf R? Cayman 2.7 or 3.4.
Any other cars come to mind? Cheers.

Something classic, or with potentially rising value. Too old, you say?

Classic is an idea, was thinking modern for usability. I guess a 911 might be an idea, say a 993?

What sort of retained value are you looking for? All if those cars will be around the 50% mark in 4 years. 993 would be my bet, but factor in maintenance.

budfox, i have to say i love the new MX5. If only they would take it off it's leash finally with say 200 bhp, i would buy one. But they never do. With every other car gaining power every year since Thatcher, the MX5 has stayed pretty much still. Another thread for that debate though!

Something like this, with limited numbers and a cult following.

Cayman R?

CSL yeah! Had a couple of those, both 53 platers. My last one was mint and fetched £30000 in 2008. Will check what they are fetching.

Might just stretch to a Cayman R. Thanks for the suggestions, all make sense. Well maybe cash in the boot didn't!!

The 4 you suggested I wouldn't want to bet on them retaining 75% of their value after a year. The difficult part is wanting something 1-4 years old, as apart from skipping year one, it's still prime time for depreciation. A good question for that reason though, I'm afraid I have no suggestions unless you can pick up a manual Porsche somehow.

Doesn't everyone in the world have a Golf R due to the cheap finance deals? When those all expire in 3-4 years, the resale value is going to be pathetic.

Golf R a fabulous car, mind you. The newest 301 bhp one really impressed me; for something that will take you on holiday, shopping and not be too shabby on a track even. Easy remap to 370 bhp too! But yep, i guess values will plummet. Cayman R i am searching for right now. It might be just the ticket.

That. 993 or 964 have gone up in value mentally. Might go up more.

Even if prices crash you would still be better off than an amg. My god man you might as well leave 20k in the street.

Nissan Skyline R34 GTR?
Granted the market to sell the car on will be small but these have been at this price for a while (£30k) and are sure to start rising eventually.
