What Car For Son - Upgrading From 1.6 Clio ?

My son is looking to upgrade from his Clio 1.6 to something "better" with the following criteria:
4/5 door as has to regularly take adult passengers
Sensible running costs / insurance (he's 21)
Budget £1500
He'd like something faster, more fun and RWD which is what I'd have wanted but I'd like him to be as safe as possible.
The obvious choices seem to be:
BMW 318 (facelift with 141bhp) I think he'll like the refinement for a week then be bored as it isn't chuckable like the clio
Mazda 3 2.0 (looks better than the Focus)
What else should he be considering ?
