Budget is £3k or less, fuel economy not important, likely to only keep it 6-12 months 'til we've moved house and I know how much cash I've got left to buy something long-term. Needs to have a decent amount of grunt though, and a few toys like cruise and climate control.

I've had a string of Saab turbos in the past as they do this kind of thing well. Downside is the non-GM stuff is getting on in years now.

So, what's the answer these days?
Volvo T5?
S-type V8?
Octavia VRS?
A6 V8?

S-type is quick and comfortable, would get a 4.2 if able as more reliable. Should be able to get one in budget.

Saab very capable.

Volvos must be good or the police wouldn't use them.

Lexus good if you can stand the American style looks.

Mondeos very good car, prefer to BMW.

Honda Accord.

Subaru Legacy, almost as good as the Jaguar.

Late model Alfa, they don't rust like they used to.

Vectra V6? Later Signums look quite smart in top spec trim.

Saab 9-5 Aero. Designed before GM took over and they share very little.

Just bought one and it is a serious piece of kit

Cheers all. Seems I was doing things right in the past with the Saabs, though fancy something different having done the 9000 and 9-5 Aero thing previously.

Hadn't thought about the big engined Mercs, I suppose I'd put them out my mind because of the way 10-15 year old ones seem to rust - or is that an unfair assumption?

With Mercedes if you're going to get a CLK for example make sure you get a W209 model like the one in the advert the earlier model is the one with the rust issues.

If you don't mind a 3.2 then here's a couple more:

Mercedes S500?

All the toys you could want, loads of space and enough performance to slay most hot hatches.

Or how about a 306bhp E500 92 on the clock £3300 buys it

I would stick with Saab rather than buying into german metal. Saabs were always over-engineered (ultimately the company's downfall) unlike the German offerings which are built to a price these days. Best of the German stuff was up to late 90's, well documented on the Internet.

Lexus GS430. Plenty of grunt (V8!), lots of toys and pretty reliable. Looks a little american but not excessively so. Excellent built quality / materials so, like the Saab, hides the miles well. A car with S/H and reasonable miles is within your budget. An example - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

With a bit de-chavving the 740 above could be very nice, certainly looks like it's been looked after. The CLK is very nice too, I had no idea they could be had so cheap now!
I'm actually looking for an everyday car with pretty much the same criteria (though economy is a bit higher priority), the Mk2 Octavia VRS seems to be ticking all the right boxes so far, whenever I drove the old version I was always impressed so the newer one must be better! However I have been paying more attention to the newer SAAB stuff the last few days, having had a couple of older ones I'd always dismissed them but they are beginning to grow on me!

Another car I was interested in was quite a bland looking Jetta with the 2.0T engine, worth a look if Q cars appeal possibly?

This would be my recommendation. (y)
