I owe an apology to Middle England. I've often said that they are identikit clones following an unimaginative, tick-box lifestyle to ensure they keep up with the Jones'. Career? Tick. Wife and family? Tick. Nice semi in a good area so the kids can get into the school they want? Tick. Half term attempt at skiing, tick.

However, I may have been a bit harsh. Observing the sheer variety of British vehicles going to and from the Alps shows that middle Britain is far more individual and imaginative when it comes to choice of vehicle than I give them credit.

There were silver volvos with black roof-boxes, black volvos with silver roof-boxes and even a few silver volvos with silver roof-boxes. None were as daring, however, as the black volvos with black roof-boxes. Their style and individuality must make them the envy of the golf club. wink

Middle England. Is your apology just for the West Midlands area then?

Pretty sure this one isn't going to go as the OP expected.

I wonder how many of them decided to make all sorts of idiotic, broad sweep judgements about your lifestyle and choices? You need to get out and see some more of the world and discover how foolish your assumptions about other people are. tt.

I have TWO Volvos, but no I've never been skiing. I am also very nearly as far from "Middle England" as it's possible to be, but I've actually met and worked with a diverse enough range of people to know that the lazy assumptions people like to make to group huge numbers of others are idiotic at best. It's the same as any other prejudice, and it's always ugly to see.

Worst "I've just been on a skiing holiday to the Alps" ever.

Plus original post quoted for safety.

Hold on a minute... I live in the West Midlands, but there's only about a half a mile more England before you leave it, so hardly "middle". AND I've never owned a Volvo, a roofbox or been on a skiing holiday. I've never even owned a silver car, but I have had a couple of black ones.

How long does it take to drive from Middle England to e Alps? A lad that I work with drives there from Wigan every year and it takes him 15 hours.

...he's got a Kia though, does that not count?

I suspect by Middle England he means the Middle class English, not the Midlands!

I'm sort of going to side with the OP here.

The vast majority of cars you see on the roads these days are silver, grey, silvery-grey, black or white. Where have all the colours gone?

Can you even get a BMW or Audi in an interesting colour any more?

I notice that the OP owns a truck. Maybe his ire is due to the lack of killable prostitutes available in Chamonix?

Is a career a wife and kids and a house in a nice area with a good school really keeping up with the Joneses? I hadn't realised that I was only getting married and having a family to keep up with other people...

It's just the way things go 20/30 years ago cars were brown or gold a bit more recent every car was red. Its just a trend.
