Recieved a fully expensed company car last week and I have opted in for personal fuel. This means I need to be taxed on fuel and the BIK of the car.

Does anyone know how to register this with HMRC?

I couldn't see it on the Gov website and I have rang around but not got anywhere. Thanks.

Your employer is obliged to let HMRC know - though it wouldn't do any harm to ring HMRC yourself as well, there is a contact number on their website.

And "enjoy" their voice recognition system!

Employer deals with it, sending you a form P11D after the end of the financial year. [Expect to receive one in May]

Ok thanks.

I only ask because other employees have had to sort it themselves and ensure they are paying correct tax code etc

I will ring later anyway and endure the automated service again!

TBH I've never heard of the employee needing to get involved at all. It's essentially all part of the PAYE reporting system and will be absorbed into your future tax code.

I've been through about 7 company cars in the past 18 months or so, all with different BIK values etc.

For each of them I've had to let HMRC know as they're none the wiser. I work for a very large company too, and even Fleet / HR said it was my responsibility to inform HMRC of any changes etc.

For peace of mind I'd ring and inform them, I wouldn't let it solely to the employer.

Another company car driver here, for years and various cars and every single time I've had to let the HMRC know, my employers hand me an A4 sheet with the full car details on. You'll need to know the cars cost when new, emissions, any optional extras, fuel type etc.

As I've just had a new company car, all you need to do is ring and say, "Company car", daft automated women confirms and you get put through to someone. Ring at 8/9am ish and you'll get through to someone straight away, ring later and you'll be on hold.

Even the HMRC aren't the most reliable people.

From January 2014 I had a Mk6 Golf that cost me around £60/month in tax. In June, that got swapped for a Renault Captur, costing £45/month (I don't get personal fuel).

So in June I phone HMRC and tell them about the cheaper Renault I'll have from the start of June, so I should, in theory, be £15 a month better off. Guy takes all the info, tells me job's a good'un.

October last year, I gave the Renault back and opted for a car allowance instead, and got myself a new Mini. Once again phoned up to let them know I've finished with the Renault as of the end of September. The person on the phone then tells me they have a Golf on record, and that there's no mention of a Renault rolleyes

So I've paid £15 too much tax on the company car for 4 months. I don't know where that £60 has gone or if I'll see it back over time, they didn't seem to be able to answer me when quizzed..

The form the employer needs to complete is a P46 (car) - google it and can be completed online, as an employer we will typically process this as part of the payroll on a monthly basis but if you submit manually i.e. by post please keep copies of correspondence with HMRC as the onus will always be on you to prove when they were notified. etc.

www.comcar.co.uk is quite useful in determining car tax and fuel benefit etc.

Was you not concerned when you didn't get a notification of change through the post? Extra you've paid will be adjusted in your new tax code, you won't be out of pocket.

Normally this is done as part of the realtime PAYE submissions. Many "perks" can just be put on the end of year P11D but cars should be changed/updated in realtime as they are changed.

If they're not then it can result in a large and unexpected tax bill at the end of the year.
