Average Speed Cameras on the Dartford Bridge

Can someone confirm if these are actually turned on and what the average speed is?

I came over the Dartford bridge yesterday coming from Thurrock back to Dartford. As you are going over the bridge the limit is 50mph which is fine and can be monitored as such.

However, when you get to the bottom of the bridge there are random signs on the side which say 40mph and then again this changes to 30mph.

As you then get to the other side you can clearly see another average speed camera set up as it changes back to 50mph. So how does it monitor the average speed as a whole?

Would you be okay doing 50mph the whole way through or does it work it out taking into account the short 40/30 stretch? The 40/30 signs only seem temporary to me while they sort out the tolls....

It's funny isn't it, it's like they're trying to catch you out.

I can't see how they can track the lower speed limits as the cameras aren't lined up with the limit change boards.

I was thinking the same thing Chris but would be interesting to hear if anyone has been prosecuted for an average speed of less than 50mph

Yes, my wife got caught going over the bridge one night doing 60mph I think.

Not sure which points are active or not, but she definitely got caught over the bridge.

Friend's son booked at 57mph over the bridge in December.

Know what you mean about the 50/40/30/50/60 zone heading south - especially after dark when you might easily miss an un-illuminted sign.
