The New Polo GTI
Discussion
I've booked myself a test drive of the new Polo GTI for when they arrive at my local dealer. This is the facelift model with the 1.8T engine. I am interested as they now offer a manual and it might be a better overall package to my Fiesta ST3 MP215 for commuting; better ride comfort, and 90% of the pace and handling...the Polo weighs 110KG more too.
Brokers are already offering the manual version for UNDER £17K before options, and speccing it up to the same spec as my ST3 brings it to just under £19k. I'll be interested in buying one to replace the Fiesta as the ride in the Fiesta gets a bit tiresome at times during the 80 mile round trip commute. The only problem is that the Fiesta is such a good car I really can't see the Polo being close in terms of enjoyment, but time will tell.
Interestingly though, torque is limited on the £1.2K more expensive DSG version:
"In this case the manual car has 236lb ft between 1450 and 4500rpm, whereas the DSG has 184lb ft available between 1250 and 5300rpm."
Looks like the manual is by far the best choice and I applaud VW for offering a manual version, it's the only way they caught my attention.
Anybody else interested in the Polo GTI?

I'm currently can't get two cars out of my head, one being the new Polo GTI, and the other being the new MX-5, I'm currently saving for a house, only had 2 cars, a MK1 MX-5 and what I currently drive, a 2005 1.2 Clio, I paid £1500 for each. I'm trying to justify to myself how I can buy either the Polo or MX-5 brand new when it's over 10 times what I've ever paid for a car (albeit I'd put down a deposit and pay monthly)....hmm, decisions decisions. I know some people think they're bland but I like their understated looks, the interior looks great and for me the Polo ticks lots of boxes, great performance, nice interior, and I assume pretty low running costs.

If it's defo a brand new one you want and you want to continue saving for a house then do the sensible thing and lease one Be interested to hear your thoughts when you drive one

Why is the DSG box torque limited then? Hardly going to blow up?!
its the entry/budget level 6 speed unit (or it was on the previous one
)Interestingly, the new Polo has port injection as well as direct injection. They're selling it as a way to improve fuelling at high revs, but I'm sure there's an element of intake valve cleaning behind it also.

I shall be considering that option (never leased before), it does seem tempting to do that or put a grand or two down and pay a couple hundred quid a month

That's a lot of torque in the manual version. Can't help but think it will be one of those cars that pulls hard from low down, but then accelerates in a diesel-like linear fashion, never feeling as quick as it actually is.
Thats half the reason I want to test drive the Polo is to see how good the engine is. The Fiesta has the same 236 lbs ft but more power and is lighter than the Polo, having that massive torque downlow is great as it makes everyday driving a breeeze but then you have a new lease of life at 4000rpm when it crosses over from torque to power. It would be ideal if VW offered a warrentied remap like Ford!Joeguard1990 said:

Don't look at the overall price, look at total cost over 2 or 3 years with PCP or lease. I'd rather take a PCP deal over lease as I don't have to tie up any cash in the deal, just monthly payments which I can afford. Like me if you are saving for a house then PCP would be the better option rather than a lease as you don't have to put any cash down in some cases and over the term PCP and leasing works out roughly the same.
I love the styling of the new MX-5 but its relative lack of torque coming from the Fiesta discounts it for me I am afraid. The Polo only caught my eye because of it's availibility in manual and the the pricing looks spot on, interior makes no odds to me, in fact I like the Fiesta's interior.
I'll re-post once I have driven one, I think it will be mid/end March when they arrive.

It will be interesting to see what it is like. But I can't see myself swapping from a Fiesta ST3, I'm probably just going to invest in some Meister Rs and then power upgrades further down the line. The Fiesta is just too much fun!
Yeah, on the drive home last night I couldn't really ask for anything more, the Fiesta is that dam good when you want a bit of fun. Out of all the car's I've driven the only other 2 that I've found as fun have been a DC5 Integra and a Cayman S. A change to coilovers would be a good shout, my only gripe is that it is a bit too hard all of the time.Like I mentioned in one of my replies, I am only considering an alternative so to reduce my monthly payments, Fiesta is over 2 years and I'd change car to a deal over 3-4 years.

Whilst I can't comment on the new Polo GTi your after have you been in a new polo recently? I felt it was one of the worst new cars I've driven or been in and I certainly wouldnt swap from a fiesta.
I haven't, thats why I've booked a test drive. My dad has a 1 litre ecoboost fiesta and it is absolutely night and day from the ST, completely different cars, I'd like to assume VW have made the GTI night and day from a regular polo.va1o said:

You'll regret letting go of the Fiesta. The chassis in them is just unbeatable IMHO.
I won't get rid of it if I have any incline that it would be regrettable. I really don't think the Polo will be as good dynamically as the Fiesta, reviews say it's not as involving but I'd like to see for myself how uninvolving it is, the test drive will tell.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
