This is the first time when genuinely I am in need of a car, and don't know what to buy. I normally buy for the sake of it, but putting the request out to PH to notify me of anything I may have forgotten here.

Budget £5k
Diesel
Automatic
Pref Rear or All Wheel Drive
Circa 35mpg
Cruise & Climate
Towing Capacity of 1650 or greater

I've shortlisted the following, but am I missing anything out?

BMW 530d/525d
Merc E300/320Cdi
Volvo XC70 D5
Jag S-Type 2.7 TD

Quite a varied spec, I like barges which gives more scope, and helps with the towing capacity. Don't mind estates either. So PH, can you help me realise what I haven't looked at. If its under budget, that helps with towbar fitting costs, but its something I need to buy this week. The rest of the fleet just won't do the job.

Thanks in advance

Sorry, didn't pick up on it. Sat here on my last day at work, on AT, finding the vehicle I need. I want to go shopping tomorrow!

not much really that fits those critieria

larger towing weights normally reserved for a 4x4

for that sort of money you could probably haggle a decent deal on a solid x5 3.0d but its gonna by 100k miles and being that bit bigger it wont hit economy, but that would be countered by getting better economy when towing as win resistance wont increase as much as it would towing with a saloon.

if its correct full BMW SH and has a towbar

I don't mind miles, my last three dailys have all been 150k plus, the scenic was 204 when I got it, 263 when I sold it. History and Condition worry me more.

I like that X5, and not one for blue normally but thats not half bad. May have to have a drive and look at it
