After 6 years of diesel powered vehicles, I'm now in a position to get something fun.

I'm quite drawn to a Civic Type R ep3, or a Clio 182, or maybe a Audi TT 225?

Basically I want something fun, reasonable running costs, and as practical as possible, although not at the cost of enjoyment, I've even considered going back to a 106 GTi!

Clio 182. You'd also have change out of your 3K. I am slightly bias though as I have one!

Cheers for your input guys, but tell me why, sell them to me!

I've heard RX8s are a nightmare?

Audi tt 225 is a very boring car to drive.

Yep. Find one that isn't due a cambelt change and make sure cheap, rattly interiors don't annoy you though.

the hard bit is finding one that's not rusty

True, I guess the change could cover bodywork and resealing?

Having owned a DC2 and a Clio Sport, I'd go DC2 every time. Sublime chassis, wonderful noise, indestructible mechanicals, and rarity value. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if they were a bit safer for tiny humans.

Find one that's got fsh and low miles but is rusty, get the rust fixed £6-700, make sure it's waxoyled and change to some aftermarket alloys £4-500 and you have a stonking car that should go up in value as the others die due to arch/sill rot.

The DC2 seems to be out of my budget, maybe a Puma racing?

The budget is £3000 , what sort of dc2 could you get for that?

Puma racing has Alcon front brakes which are expensive to keep in good fettle also its only 0.5 seconds faster to 60 than a standard 1.7 and they cost ££££ to buy, Would be even more if Ford had put an RS badge on em! Go with whats suggested above and get what i did a few years ago, A 2 owner X reg 1.7 with 64K from new and FFSH, Absolutly mint bar a tiny spec of arch rust and needing a clutch, I gave £430 for it, Ive had 4 Puma's, An often overlooked bargain of a car with IMO styling that hasnt really dated and excellent roadholding, Also due to its Fiesta underpinnings a lot of parts that wear out are cheap bar the 1.7 engine but thats bombproof if looked after and theres tons of 1.7 Pumas being broken or scrapped so S/H engines etc are readily available.

Not if you value your teeth and spine, suspension on the roads as they are on standard cars is harsh enough (right tyres make a big difference), the racing puma has harder bushes, stiffer springs and bigger alloys.....

Whilst mentioning alloys standard Ford ones are made of toffee paper hence my earlier comment to replace with none standard ones, 15inch alloys means you can put premium rubber on each corner for less than £60 each.
