Hi folks, a bit of advice needed negotiating a car sale.

I have found a nissan almera 53 plate and the seller wants £850 , the car has done 40000 miles with an elderly person. I haven't bothered comparing prices on Glasses guide, Parkers guide suggests £720 for a 120000 mileage. The MOT runs out in May and the seller isn't keen on getting a MOT done before the sale, so I'll need to rely on the full service history/advisories from previous MOTs.

Would you recommend trying to negotiate the price down? I suspect the seller won't budge as they feel it's got a good service history and low mileage and the impression I get is that it's not going to be a significant reduction.

If the seller doesnt agree a reduction just walk away?

What target price would you guys aim for?

Any advice from experienced buyers?

TBH anything for that money is a risk, I'd offer what you think its worth and if not accepted walk away there are loads of cheap cars round and he'll struggle to sell it with a short MOT.

once the MOT runs out it'll be worth less than half!

It's an anomaly.

How can you chip an old boy down if it's as described-it's £850. For a car with 40k on the clock!

I'd pretty much go with the full price, if you spot anything needing doing (2 new tyres etc) I'd just try and knock that off the price. If he won't budge it's only up to you if it's worth it.

You don't have to buy it, and he doesn't have to sell it smile

well, the MOT runs out end of May, parkers does value at £720 for 120000 miles - unsure what cost I could look for the additional 80000 miles , in your view do you think £850 is reasonable? It does have scuff marks on the front bumoper, so not entirely immaculate smile

I'm after views/advice - what do you reckon you'd pay Laurasotherhalf smile

Don't be fixated on Parkers prices. They can be a bit fairy tale.

As above, I'd go into it at the asking price then try and knock a bit off if tyres/brakes need replacing. Alternatively you could ask for the price of the MOT off or ask him to put it through a test now ( you don't have to wait until expiry to do a test) and go from there.

Forget Parkers. What are other similar cars out there advertised for?

It's a 12yo Almera with one-little-old-boy mileage on it. I'm not sure that's a plus, although the fact it's an Almera certainly isn't.

Automatic? Let's hope so, because otherwise bargain on a clutch very soon. Look carefully at all the corners. Look carefully at anything else that could have been bounced off stuff in parking bingles. Make sure it's been serviced properly on time, because it won't have ever reached mileages.

Ffs its 850 quid, you're expecting a full history??! Get real its banger money and nothing more. Honestly, if half the air heads on here had any common sense they'd be dangerous!

I think, given the description, £850 is a bit of a piss take. £820 is probably about right.

It's worth £849 and not a penny more.

Cheap, clean, reliable, low mileage cars are few and far between at the moment so are getting expensive.

If it is nice then it is worth £850 all day long.

If it's a solid car and drives well offer £750 and agree on £800.
Is is really worth your time and effort to search and travel to miss a decent car for the price of round of drinks?

The Almera is a pretty tough little car, I was in one when it crashed through a stone wall and we all walked away (although the car paid the ultimate sacrifice and left on a lowloaded never to grace out roads again).

Seriously though, Nissan cars of that age are mechanically well proven.

I've just checked the CAP price. Depends what model it is but if it is a 53-plate with 40k and nice then it is a steal.

I'd pay a bag for that. Quick once over, control arms if required, cheeky MOT and bang it out for £1895. But then, I can see a low mileage, bullet proof Nissan with full history (the Kylie Minogue of desirability for shed owners)

Or, you could always kick the old duffer in the nuts. It's probably also his deceased wife's car and he's only letting it go to forget.....

Personally, I'd give him the 850 and thank him. You cheapskate!
