The following companies build cars in Britain, but are not UK owned.

Bentley Motors in Crewe (owned by Volkswagen) builds the Continental, Flying Spur and Mulsanne

Rolls Royce builds the Ghost, Phantom and Wraith in Goodwood and is owned by BMW.

Jaguar/Land Rover cars (F-type, XJ, XF, XK, Defender, Discovery, Evoque, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport) are built in the West Midlands and Liverpool but owned by Tata Motor Company of India.

MG Motors build the MG3 and MG6 at Longbridge, Birmingham – owned by SAIC of China.

Vauxhall Motors are part of General Motors and build Astras at Ellesmere Port and the Vivaro van in Luton

Ford stopped passenger car production in the UK in 2002 and Transit production in Southampton in July 2013 but continues to manufacture engines in Bridgend and Dagenham and transmissions in Halewood.

Reliant no longer build cars – the Robin was transferred to a company called B&N Plastics in Suffolk, but although they supply parts, no Robins are being manufactured at the moment.

Bear in mind that component parts of cars are also built in the UK and then shipped to whoever assembles the car. So your super reliable gearbox in your V6 Mondeo (for example) may be built by a small industrial unit somewhere in Sunderland.

Peugeot built cars at it's Ryton plant until 2006 after which the place was smashed up.

Cant tell a UK built one from a French built one, save for checking the serial number. Both are of the same build quality... mostly bad, but Ok in some area's.

Seriously? Could you put a time scale on that - in the last 20, 40, 60 or 100 years?

In a time where even McDonald's burgers are identical whether bought in London or Lusaka, I find this hard to believe. Care to detail the differences?

The preservatives in McDonalds food and the general shoddiness of Peugeot manufacturing and build quality means that the McDonalds burger has a much longer shelf life and as such can be shipped half way around the world and stored almost indefinitely without any deterioration in ahem quality.

worth looking at the smmt website for more facts. Like this gem:

The Nissan factory in sunderland produces more cars per year...

...then the whole of Italy.

It is likely 2015 more cars will be built in the UK then at any other time. Including the 60s/70s.

Not exactly recent but my old 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee was built in Austria and was in a different league compared to the identical car made in the US.

his rattled a lot, the seats fell apart, parcel shelf went floppy

always in the garage being fixed

mine was solid and rattle free, and never needed anything other than wear a tear parts.

It always made me chuckle that if you bought a Jeep, it was built in Austria - but if you bought a BMW or Merc 4x4, it was built in the US.

Yeah, it's bonkers - glad though. It was well built and 100% reliable even though I gave it a right caning out in the desert on a regular basis.
