As the title suggests my friend has just got his 986 back after being semi destroyed when he left it parked up on a public road in Germany. The body shop have done a reasonable job but it was immaculate before and looking at it now I can see all manner of shoddiness. Question is do I point out the glaring flaws or stfu? I want to say something but worry I'll just being an ass.

I don't see it as insulting to point out someone has done a bad job on their car.

In my opinion far too many bodyshops get away with shoddy work an try to convince people it's the best that can be done.

I'm sure he'll be aware of the glaring flaws if they're glaring. You'll just be pissing on his chips.

"Yup, still looks proper fked mate" - might not go down too well.

Similar thing happened to a colleagues car.
I told them the job was awful & it was redone by the bodyshop.
Car would have been massively de-valued otherwise.

I recently got a VW camper back from a bodyshop.

When I picked it up I was happy as larry but as soon as my mechanic and a good friend of mine laid eyes on it, they both told me it was a shoddy job.

I was just that happy to have it back, I glazed over all the flaws that should have been glaringly obvious to me.

Standing back with fresh eyes I totally agreed with them and to cut a long and difficult story short, the van will be returning to the bodyshop to get re done.

If you have enough knowledge/experience to tell if the job is shoddy or not then I believe you have the right to say something from an experienced point of view and if you explain how the job was done badly. Turning up and just saying "that looks shiiite mate" isn't going to help anything.

I say the same thing about people who comment on other peoples driving. If you are a driving instructor or have had some form of driver training that allows you to see where other people can improve then yes, advise people. Otherwise, stfu.

You sound like the kind of guy who would deal with this in a constructive way naturally.

I would say something to him, he might br happy now as he has his car back but when that has worn off and he starts looking at things carefully..

Manufacturer approved Bodyshop did poor work on mine and it was sent back, if you don't send it back then your the one who will get shafted if you try and sell it.
