Paint Stripper (That actually works)

Getting into the spring of things (get it) by doing up a few things which require the old paint taken off them.

Calipers, window sills etc etc.

So far i've bought Diall paint stripper from Block and Quayle which was rubbish.

Nitro Mors which said 'new and improved' so i expected it to be better than it used to be. It has so far caused some flaking but three coats later and it's not working like it did 5 or 10 years ago when it had the dedrachloride (sic) in it.

The callipers have one coat and none have worked on what I believe is Hammerite

Any paints stripper actually work these days?

Yes, get some Starchem Synstrip.

It is good olde fashioned full fat painter stripper with a goodly amount of dichloromethane in it. Will take your breath away and burn your skin!

I last used it about two years with very good effect stripping down some alloy wheels.

By far the best out there. Make sure you wear a mask, gloves and have long sleeves.

No paint strippers that you can buy in the usual DIY sheds (B&Q, Homebase) etc. work properly these days. Nitromors is particularly crap and they should be prosecuted for audacity to advertise it as "double strength". It's double the strength of a weak cup of tea maybe.

The proper stuff (e.g. Starchem) is only supposed to be available to trade, so you may well have to agree to some kind of disclaimer.

I've used klingstrip recently with good results, it's basically caustic soda in a putty. Takes at least two days to work and is messy as hell but does the job.

I've not found Hammerite to be particularly strong, I've even dissolved it with cellulose thinners in the past!

The EU made them change the recipe a while back. That alloy wheel stuff looks good - anything available direct to the public will indeed be Tetley strength at best.

Go somewhere that sells paint gun supplies and buy some gun cleaner.

I work for Henkel (Nitromors) and agree it's not on the same level as before the EU stepped in.

There will be a new formula that is as effective as the old one coming out end of May. Sorry that doesn't solve your immediate problem.

I'm afraid we're all in the 'Elf and Saffti' world now. No chemicals to do thing available to the general public work anymore. Haven't had a decent kettle descaler for years, recently had to replace bits on the washing machine and shower head because I couldn't find anything 'off the shelf' thats works any more. If you've a mate in the industry, then that's the best place to get stuff now days. Paint strippers, grease/oil removers, de-scaling stuff, even bloody exterior paint, wood preserver, all real crap now. Carbon tetrachloride was banned years ago, then soon after trichloroethene become hard to get. And forget Acetone, you'll be a suspected bomb maker if you try and buy any large quantities of that. I'm not sure the modern water based paints aren't any good either.

If that's the same thing as "gun wash" then it's just a solvent which is great for cleaning a spray gun that recently been used, but useless for stripping old paint.

I miss the old Nitromors and the panic'd rush to a tap when you get it on bare skin!

Yes Current Nitromors is pants. I tried to use it to strip the paint from the bonnet of one of my classics. Nothing happened!
I found a rusty tin of the old stuff in my dads shed It worked a treat --I knew it would as the fumes made my eyes water.

I bought some of this stuff (eBay item 291398729727) a while ago and it's excellent stuff. Avoid skin contact as it will take it off...
