In short, I just bought a car 5 days ago. I have tried to tax it but to no avail. I have tried to do so on the following website: https://www.taxdisc.service.gov.uk/ and select the "New keeper (using V5C/2 new keeper supplement document reference number)" option. It states that I should enter my 12-digit Doc.Ref.No even though mine is only 11 digits, resulting in it not working!!

Why is my V5C/2 number only 11 digits?
How can I tax my vehicle?

There was a guy on here a few days ago who appended a zero to the reference number and it worked. You could try that. He did say that the woman he called at the DVLA seemed a bit miffed it worked, but it worked all the same. The other option would be to nip to the Post Office tomorrow morning and get them to sort it there.

I think this will be because it's an old and out of date blue V5

They were all replaced with red ones due to some blank blue ones leaking out in the public domain.

As I understand it, the red ones have 12 digits, they certainly do for all my cars and the one I've recently bought (and taxed online).

ETA I hate the DVLA too though. They are shocking.

Mine is actually green but still only has 11 digits.
It is similar to the one pictured below:

Note, it's not exactly the same as above but very similar.

Haha, I've since tried placing every possible digit in front of my Doc. Ref. No. unfortunately, it hasn't worked but I think a trip to the post office tomorrow morning may be in order.

The V5C/2 is always green, the front page of the V5C itself used to be blue, now is red. Blue ones have 11 digits and cannot be taxed online.

Oh right, this is my first time buying a used car so sorry for my incompetence. I did not get to see the front page and only got that small VC5/2 slip, so wouldn't know. Thanks for your replies though and I guess I'll just have to go to the post office tomorrow.

There's the thread where this issue cropped up before. I am unsure if it will help, but there we are.

Top lurkage there Mr. Dialup. I'm guessing you're on a 2400 dialup modem, and it's taken all these years just to load the page wink

Could not tax my new Vehicle online due to only having 11 Digits.the following day I went to the Post Office and was told the reason I only had 11 Digits was because the previous owner was a Disabled Driver........

That's not true - this came up on another thread on a different forum a while back, and I checked through mine and one of those only has eleven digits on an early one. And, contrary to what some people might shout at me, I'm not a disabled driver.

Ive just had this same problem and simply added a zero to the start to make a 12 digit reference. Worked fine.

I've got the V5C/2 with a 12 digit number.
Still can't tax the bugger though.
Previous keeper was a disabled driver, and the car was tax exempt. Now I need to tax it as a 'normal' car, the online service won't work. Looks like I'm off to the PO tomorrow.....
My question is this - It's the only car I have access to and I need it to get to work and back.
Am I on offer to plod while driving it, even though God knows I've tried to tax it?
