Quick car under 10K

I am soon to be 20 and will have 2 years no claims discount, which opens the door to a reasonably quick car without extortionate insurance prices! I've looked at most of the obvious hot hatches such as a MINI Cooper S, Clio 197 RS and Fiesta ST etc... I've also done an insurance quote on a 2.7 Porsche Boxster (986), which turns out to be cheaper to insure than most hot hatches!
My question is how would the Porsche compare to the hot hatches in terms of running costs, parts, tyres and servicing etc? and are there any other cars I should consider with reasonable insurance costs?
My budget for the car is under 10k, ideally around £8K, with insurance costing around £1K

Wildly varying cars there based on price -
Fiesta ST - the new ones start around 13K, the old ones are more like £4K
Clio 197 - around 5-6K, 8K would get you into a Clio 200
It depends how much you want to spend really. I had a 6K-ish budget myself and went for the Clio 197, and it's fantastic, BUT, if I had a 10K budget, I'd have gone for something a little more "up-market" I think, personally. 10K buys a whole lot of car.

It depends how much you want to spend really. I had a 6K-ish budget myself and went for the Clio 197, and it's fantastic, BUT, if I had a 10K budget, I'd have gone for something a little more "up-market" I think, personally. 10K buys a whole lot of car.

How about a 350z? I know it's not to everyone's taste but you can pick one up from 6k for a high miler. 8k will get you a very decent early model GT.
Insurance was surprisingly cheap for me at 23 having just graduated uni. Paying the same on my Z as my daily driver Saxo!! Also tax isn't too bad for pre '06 cars (also roughly on par with the Sh!troen). Other running costs are reasonable although fuel can get quite pricey, average MPG's in the low 20's for town work with a bit of dual carriageway, also requires 97+ RON fuel.

At 20 with 2 years NCB I was insuring a 300bhp Celica GT4 - was a hell of a lot faster than everything my friends were driving and a bit of a laugh and only £1k on the insurance! Wanted an MR2 turbo initially but an owner talked me into getting the GT4 instead - should have gone for the MR2 in hindsight!
You could always go "off piste" and save a load of money and buy something like a Saab 9-5 aero manual....250 bhp and for £3-4k you'd get a great car and save the rest of the money for when you're say 23-25 and have even more £s and can get into something like an M135 or even an M3 etc.
PS I've noticed on A/trader an 04 Saab Aero estate for £2.5k - useful if you're into cycling and want to chuck your bike in the back rather than hang it off the back! Sometimes the bigger cars actually give massive value as buyers are put off the mpg.

You might want to look at a Z4 Coupe as £8k - £10k would get you a really nice one.
Gorgeous looks that have aged gracefully, RWD, great chassis and handling, fast, but also quite frugal - I averaged 28mpg from mine and that included daily commuting into Manchester. It was really reliable too.
Sold the one picture for £9.400 to another lad your sort of age last month and he is loving it!

I'm pro Saab - run an insurance quote on a v6 manual Saab 9-3 saloon, bet you'll be surprised.
Don't want to ramble about how well priced Saabs are, but they're very well priced. An exhaust and a remap will see you past 300bhp and into the land of crazy torque. A few more goodies and a bigger turbo will see you past 400bhp and over 500 ft lbs torque iirc. That's JZW figures.
