£22k ish to spend on one or the other - Had 4 BMW's of late and one Merc and all I love, but thinking with my head which is the better value over say two years ?

(the boring bit - 2.0d diesels - but with bells and whistles

Isn't the E based on the E (ie 5 series) and the 4 based on the 3.

Different classes?

Normally you'd think that but the current E coupe is based on the C class platform. It's quite a lot smaller, especially narrower, than the 'proper' E.

FWIW, having owned an E coupe and a fair few BMW's including a current shape 3 series, I'd probably go for the E. It's definitely not as sporty feeling as the BMW but it's vastly better built, feels more classy, more refined and it rides beautifully. Merc have made it feel relatively premium.

No it's not The E is based on the E Platform hence the E Class interior The C Class Coupe is based on the C Class the 4 Series is based on the 3 Series.

If you wanted the equivalent BMW then you'd be looking at a 6 Series.

Are you basing that on knowledge or what you think is true? There are many articles written about the E coupe being based on the C platform.

Wrong, the E Class Coupe is based on the previous generation C Class, and yes so is the C Class Coupe.

My Mistake then but having read up further the chassis was stretched in both length & width to accomodate the E Class parts, so hardly a C class

The E Class Coupe is a competitor to the 6 Series.

No, it really isn't. It's miles from that. It's really a very dated car especially inside. IMHO I'd have trouble picking it over a 4 Series, let alone a 6 Series.

A look at comparable model list prices:

E350 CDI AMG Line: £42600
BMW 430d M Sport: £40945
BMW 640d M Sport (The base diesel): £65895!

It's HUGELY more expensive.

C-Class and E-class have same wheelbase and similar dimensions. 4-coupe also very similar. 6-coupe is much bigger, although not inside!

Right, so that all cleared up then rolleyes It's C underpinnings are most notable in the width, which is a lot narrower than a proper E class.

According to a couple of dealers, in fairness one was a Merc and the other an independent, 4 series coupes residuals re taking a battering at the mo, as they've flooded the market with cheap deals.

Had both out for a test drive, must admit, preferred the Merc for the drive, but the 4 series looks imho a wee bit better compared to the SE. Cant quite creep to a facelifted AMG on the coupe

Probably not too helpful but looks-wise I much prefer the C-class Coupe to the E - the latter has an awkward looking division in the rear windows, and we've now established that they share the same underpinnings and aren't much different size-wise.

But then again as a 2 lire diesel I'd probably just go for a 2 Series anyway (but then I don't need rear space and the OP may).

Good luck anyway!

It always struck me as a bit odd that Mercedes don't have a 6-series competitor but have two 4-series sized coupes.
