This has infuriated me beyond belief ( unless I have totally missed the point, which I may have )

I read the below in an an article in classic and sports car that the makers of Idris Elba speed programme or whatever it's called are claiming

"AWARD-winning actor Idris Elba has powered into Carmarthenshire and beaten the British land speed record" for a flying mile

Really !! Apart from the fact I believe it's factually incorrect !

Surely the British land speed record can't be that low ?

Very kindly on an Aston Martin day ( from a standing start we were hitting 165mph and the instructor 170 +) some half decent driver must be topping 180+ surely ?

Someone please explain this rubbish to me or failing that dear Aston Martin can you please lend me a vanquish so I can go and beat this properly !!

Yours incensed

Phib

Ps at least Campbell did it properly !!

i don't think i understand this flying mile record
fastest average speed over 1 mile was 174.8 and is now 180.361
If i'm honest i think i've beaten at least the first one over 10 years ago on the A27 (allegedly) but no one from guinness (or Sussex police) were there to witness it.

Anyway how would one go about beating this officially, I guess they don't count v max as many of the cars are over 200mph at brunters anyway ?

Was posted on PH the day it happened.

Such is the wonder of Internet / Printed periodicals.
I'm just yanking your chain smile
But these things get posted up here ( and everywhere else ) within minutes of it happening.

I agree with you - pick a dead easy long forgotten record.
Shove in some talentless celeb who will prostitute him/her self for any company and decree "Woo... a new record."

It's like some tea company insured it's lead tea testers' test buds for £1,000,000.
Probably cost them £500
They got about £5,000,000 in free airtime advertising announcing it.

The point is, for me at least, less that they picked on some long-forgotten record and belittled a hero with some bit-part actor in the process, but that Idris Elba hasn't actually broken any record of note at all. But it's on the telly so it must be true.
