Hackers manage to remotely take over and control a Jeep Cherokee over the mobile network!

Coming to a town near you soon, no need to physically steal a car anymore. Just hack one and let it deliver itself to you. hehe

On that note, do you reckon you could get someone to remotely drive you home from the pub? I sense a business opportunity here...

Would need a law change though.....as you'd technically still be in command/control of said vehicle though in the eyes of the law as it stands...?

Saw this in action recently, although very clever I wouldn't want it as it seems too easy for someone to gain access to all the car's systems. It also records every journey in detail with loads of vehicle info attached.

If you are over the limit and you get into the back of your car now, with the keys in your hand, you can be done, so it's no different.

Which is why if we kipped in the cars after an event we'd swap keys.

Why do you need Internet in your car anyway.

Anything can be vunerable.

I suppose the likes of BMW, Merc and plenty of others like to sell remote assist services in case of accidents, etc. They can monitor things like airbag deployment, call your car and dispatch emergency services if required. Been around for years.

I guess. I just think cars are trying to be too clever sometimes.

Think in this case it's a case of poor security allowing the vunerability to be exploited. Working in IT as my day job I see it often; any time there's something that someone can hack into or modify then SOMEONE will at some point.

Absolutely stupid designers in my opinion that chose to physically connect the critical vehicle control systems to the internet/entertainment systems. What possible need is there to do that?? Should be physically separate. The entertainment system can use its own accelerometers and physical sensors to report a crash if needed, with no ability to change steering/brakes.

Looks like the common weakness is HVAC, which needs to display information on the infotainment system, hence the interconnect...
