Went to fill up earlier and the guy says over the tannoy "sir, you will have to close your door before filling up".
Never been a problem before. What's the thinking here??

Don't need to look far on YouTube to see Americans videoing their fill ups (vloggers etc)

Probably the risk of filling your car up with explosive fumes.

Nothing major really...

Why would you intentionally leave your door open whilst filling your car?

Was the open door on the non-pump side, so could have been in the way of anybody passing between your car and the one the other side of the "aisle"?

If not, then it's just a little hobby-horse of the bloke behind the till.

But, to look at it a different way, why WOULD you leave the door open...?

I suspect that the door was blocking his view, in case you were doing something you shouldnt.

Doubt it - petrol cap is behind the door

In their wisdom, police advise that bilkers will leave their door open for a speedy getaway. Straight from the horses mouth: I st you not.

Anti-theft policy would be my guess, does seem a little officious in an Elise (hardly first choice for a drive-off and not like you couldn't just step over the door anyway).

Yep, an open driver's door is a known indicator of a potential 'drive off'. Just like filling a Jerry can through the open rear door window.

Left mine open today while filling up at a pay at the pump machine. No tannoy intervention for me

No explanation why I did.. I just did.

I've done it while talking to a passenger when putting in 70 litres, I get bored quickly.

I had that too, the woman was getting quite aggressive about it and eventually she came out... I think they thought I was filling up little cannisters/jerry cans in the boot...

Well, you are now infamous.

Nobody in Pistonheads history has ever had a problem with either shutting their door, or being asked to shut their door in a petrol station.

If this were a nicer world I would say that maybe it's because they didn't want anyone to nick anything out of your car while you weren't looking?

Alright the roof was down but if it wasn't that's what I would presume, not knowing anything about drive away tactics.

I didn't have an issue shutting my door. I closed it after being asked to!

I take it the petrol filler/tank is in the boot then? smile
