Has anyone here ever used the HMRC NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrivals) scheme for importing a car from inside the EU?

Although it's reasonably clear looking at the online stuff, it says that HMRC will calculate the VAT for you.

I'm assuming that if you declare the value of the car as £1000 then they will calculate the VAT at 20% = £200.

I'm also assuming that they will want some kind of proof of the value.

I'm looking at something a bit over 10K so VAT on that would be significant

Has anyone any experience of using this?

No VAT applicable if inside the EU-unless you are buying it VAT free?

I've read the following from this site:
https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/...

"Second-hand vehicles

You don’t usually have to pay VAT if you’re importing a second-hand vehicle and the VAT was paid in another EU country.

You’ll have to pay VAT if your vehicle is classed as a ‘new means of transport’ - ie it’s less than 6 months old and has done less than 6,000km (about 3,728 miles). HMRC will tell you if this is the case."

I assume that as it's a car that was manufactured and first sold and registered in the UK (and later exported within the EU) that the VAT was paid then....am I right?

If the car was first registered here there is nothing to pay.

I took 2 cars and 2 cars abroad and back in. Nothing paid to re-register.

Just give them a call, the people working there were very helpful to me.

Thanks everyone for the replies.............

I've sent off a question to HMRC on their online bit with specific details of the purchase.

Apparently they'll reply within 15 days

I'll post their reply when I get it.

Cars registered in the EU and have VAT paid in said country are not liable for taxes. In the last 18 months I've brought a German car over and a UK car that went to Germany and repatriated: neither were liable. Both were processed online, which took only a few minutes.

When I said if the car was registered here previously and said nothing to pay, that includes the £200 registration fee.

Sorry, my mistake. It was £200 for the 4

Looks like it's now £55 a vehicle?
