Suggest me a car
Discussion
Don't you just hate compromises?
A friend lived in Manchester, his girlfriend from Leeds and the compromise when they moved in together was Huddersfield! Was either one of them happy with Huddersfield?
So suggest me a better compromise car. My wife and I work in London and live in the North West. London is all public transport so that means our car does about 3-6000 miles a year. I've got rid of my car (MR2) and we use a 1 litre Toyota Yaris. It's economical but...
Can you suggest anything interesting that will be an effective compromise for both of us?
£500 - £5000
Hatchback
Small(ish) about Golf sized
Handles reasonably
Performs reasonably but won't scare anyone
Looks good
35+ mpg
I don't think I'm that fussy. I've enjoyed driving Mk2 Golf Ryders, Focus 1.6 Mk1 etc.

Some nice suggestions thanks - I've not thought about a fast Clio
Mk2 Golf - that's a nice one in a great colour but perhaps a bit too old to be the only car. It will be sitting in the street for a week or so and then be expected to always start first time.
Audi S3 - these are sisters to Golf Mk4s. Do they handle?
A Golf - well Mk4 looks good and nearly bought a 1.8T but a lot of comments about poor handling. The Mk5 looks a bit fat-assed and interesting one's are top or over budget.
How about a Honda Civic? On paper it is warm(ish) 0-60 8.9secs and economical with presumably Honda reliability. Some comments the Type S GT has rock hard ride
